Landslides Paralyze a Village

ODARVE'S NOTEBOOK IN THE PHILIPPINES

By Vic Odarve

Like volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis; landslides also paralyze a village where it occurs.

Landslide is characterized by a descent of a mass of earth and rock down a mountain slope due to gravity. The instability of the slope is sometimes triggered by earthquakes and heavy rains. Earthquakes may have caused stress, damage, and eventually weaken the foundation of rocks and earth of the mountain slopes. And during heavy rain, water seeps through cracks and pore spaces in underlying foundation, and encounters a layer of slippery material, such as limestone or clay. Thus, water-saturated soil becomes like liquid mud, an effect called liquefaction, and finally cracks the earth and stone formation of the slopes. If the support is not strong, the upper surface of these softened and well-lubricated layers of mass of earth and rock slides down due to gravity, thus a landslide occurs.

History Repeats Itself

By Vic Odarve

Have you seen your television every morning? The world’s situation is a giant mess!  News on Syria, Egypt, South China Sea, and Russian invasion in Ukraine caught your attention. Russia and China, both look like a Poseidon holding a trident, are ready to smite their own oppositions. And the world seems gasping its last breath! History is to repeat itself!

Our old folks experience the Second World War in 1945.

Most of our old folks are war veterans

Look at Crimea, Ukraine! It is an aftermath of Georgia. In 2008, Mr. Putin invaded Georgia and paid no price for that action. NATO and its western allies were on standstill. No action. And lately he proceeded to takeover Crimea, saying his country could not “ignore calls for help” from ethnic Russians in Ukraine.  Putin declared that he acted accordingly with the international law. That was his point.

On opposite side of the globe China bullied his small neighbors by making her own demarcation line on the South China seas and claimed to be its integral part of the mainland. China has bullied the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei and unilaterally staked claims to wide swaths of international air space and sea lanes. China also claimed Senkaku Islands from Japan in the East China Sea.

Both their actions are against the UN Charter and international law. Russia’s action in Crimea is a clear “violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial

integrity.” China’s rejections to its settlement thru UN arbitration are also against the international law like the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS. And she shows no sign of backing away from its growing assertiveness in disputed waters in the East China and South China seas.

Today, these powerful nations Russia and China are becoming more frightening because of the various excuses such as reuniting their own speaking people and thru intimidation, flex their muscles over their small neighbors.

This is exactly what happened before World War II. Yes, history seems to repeat itself. Germany under Hitler launched his own expansionist drive with the annexation of Austria in March 1938; Czechoslovakia, the Sudetenland and its 3.5 million ethnic Germans in September 1938; and Poland in September 1, 1939. Japan, too, by late 1938 had seized control of most of northeast China and imposed several measures designed to assimilate the Korean population.

As always in world history, United Nations and the western allies are the last walls to deter the expansions. Red lines establishments, calculated sanctions, and enforcements of the international laws and UN charters are some of the measures to save peace rather than to force military experts to their own drawing boards.

These current situations are very delicate and a mite too late to resolve may result to another apocalypse. Like matter and anti matter which annihilates each other, there are always pros and cons, as violators and followers to international law. Nobody wants confrontation.

As shown, Russia and China are like Germany and Japan of old. Both appear to lose the touch of reality of our real world. History seems to repeat itself!

Simplest Way to Study Math

      By Vic Odarve

This is the simplest way to learn mathematics! It is enjoyable and fun! Follow me and let’s explore!

At classroom, you listen intently to your teacher or lecturer. Every word he speaks gathers important information. Observe how he does the steps in solving the problems or exercises. Ask a question if necessary.

Working Examples at the classroom

Then at home, it is your turn! Open your notes. Review and study the steps. Recall the reasons why the professor does it.

Finally, test your understanding! This is the moment! Close the notes and get an extra sheet of paper and solve it by yourself. If you fail to get the correct answer, open your notes and see why you get wrong. Rework if you get wrong! Don’t stop doing it until you get it right! It is just like playing the game of “hide and seek”. You hide the solutions of the problems in your notes and seek its answer by solving yourself. That’s it!

It’s as simple as that. It is just a pleasure! Practice makes perfect as the saying goes. It holds true!

This simple technique develops a positive thinking. If the final answer is the same as your notes, it gives you confidence. And getting the correct answer raises your adrenaline to a certain level of excitement and joy. Confidence is building up!

Then go out in your room and relax. See the world outside. It pictures better. It sounds good. You will be in a good mood as if the world is joining your excitements. Happiness for getting the correct answer! That is without seeing the solution from your notes! And you get it right! It is like a medicine. It alleviates depression! It fosters positive mood!

Harvesting rice in Mayana- Beautiful scenery is the work of His Hands

One of my friends was doing this before our final exam. I met him outside of his house, seeing the beautiful pictures of the old school of Mayana Elementary School and National Pilgrimage Center at Elele, River State, Nigeria. He was singing as if in harmony with the bird’s sweet song on the bough of the trees as the sunset faded in the western sky. I told him “Why are you looking these pictures so happy and smiling, my friend”? What was his answer? “I know now the secrets on how to study mathematics.” Then he showed me his scratched papers and said,” I solve it by myself, without looking my notes”. That was his reply. So astonishing!

It caught me by surprise. Indeed, he had learned mathematics in the simplest way!

Learning mathematics is a fun-filled activity. It makes the lives of the students better and, us, too. Even this simple technique is interesting! I love students come to see me with toothy smiles, saying,” Sir, you make our study in mathematics in this university simple and easy”.

Science and the Spirit World

       By Vic Odarve

When one of the students asked me how science treated the unseen spirit world, I simply said that these two subjects -science and spirit – are two different worlds. And they exist in parallel planes. In mathematics, two parallel planes do not meet nor intersect. Why? Because science is based on experiments, principles, measurements, and facts while the belief on spirit world is based on unseen forces beyond our understanding. Hence, the experiments, measurements, equations, and other parameters cannot be established in the spirit world. Therefore, unseen spirit world cannot be subjected to scientific exploration. It is inaccessible to science. This is a realm out of the scientific domain.

Dark matter cannot be seen

Dark matter cannot be seen

Our physical senses limit our understanding to the world around us. Science discovered that as much as 90 percent of the stuff constituting our known universe may be objects or particles that cannot be seen. Dark matter, for example, is invisible. Astronomers have determined its existence by detecting its gravitational interaction with matter that does give off detectable electromagnetic radiation in the clusters of galaxies. Dark energy, too, is believed to be the energy counteracting the gravitational attraction of matter as our expanding universe accelerates and keeping some stars from flying away their orbits.

On spirit beings, mankind feels their presence through miracles and unexplained phenomena in our surroundings. It’s invisible and mysterious forces interact with people. Just like electricity, the wind, and gravity. We feel their existence and even harness their forces, but we cannot see these stuff. People witness events and happenings that defy the laws of physics. And science has no tangible explanations. These miracles are not accessible to the methodologies of the scientific world. Science rules out the divine action!

These kids are too young to know spiritual world

These kids are too young to know spiritual world

And we have numerous biblical records that account the existence of spiritual being. In fact, we communicate them. God and angels did communicate our great biblical ancestors like Abraham and Moses! Clairvoyants and psychics, too, nowadays contact the spirit beings and they do this since time immemorial.

Harvesting rice in Mayana- Beautiful scenery is the work of His Hands

Harvesting rice in Mayana- Beautiful scenery is the work of His Hands

The day may soon arrive for everyone to silence that we really belong to this spiritual world. The bible, sacred book by all Christians, teaches us that we live as spirit beings temporarily clothe with flesh and blood. That is, after physical death, our spirit will return to where we come from… to the spirit world.

Now listen to the one who came from spiritual world and dwelt among us, then returned to the world where he belonged;

“My kingship does not come from this world. If I were king like those of this world, my guards would have fought to save me from being handed over to the Jews. But my kingship is not from here.””

– John 18, 35-36

“But Jesus said, “You are from below and I am from above; you are of this world and I am not of this world.”

– John 8, 23

Indeed, science and spirit are two different worlds! Before the great flood, Enoch, the man of God and grandfather of Noah, told us the same story. The choice to believe or not to believe is ours. Remember the time is at hand when the dust of all our cities incarnadines the sunsets of the world!

To God, be His glory!
