Parental Love…A Love That a Child Needs

                                                                By Vic Odarve

As a child is being brought forth to the earth and say “hello world”, it is normally a joyous occasion. This is a moment when parental love begins and expands from there as the days go on. Parental love is defined as the affection that comes from a mother, father or guardian. It comprises of supports and guidance and discipline. And above all, these affections and guidance or support is unconditional and unwavering dedication to their children. Parental love… is a love that every child needs.

Parents, usually the mother, feel the fondness and tenderness of the child at the moment of their birth; cradling a tiny newborn child in their arms demonstrates of a true joy of womanhood. It is a wonderful experience.. that is, giving birth to another life. A kiss on the cheeks, picking them when they are crying and keep dancing until they fell asleep and breastfeed when they get hungry are the demonstration of affection. Parents make them feel secure and loved. The compassion and love of a mother to her child is

beyond measure. In biblical times, two women ask Solomon to resolve a conflict. Each bore a son, but one son has passed away. Each woman claims the living child to be her own. So difficult to decide who is the true mother that King Solomon orders that the boy be cut in half and shared. The first woman agrees while the other begs Solomon instead to give the child to her rival. Solomon, being a wise king, awards the unharmed child to the woman who was willing to sacrifice her claim to save the boy’s life. The reason is clear: Her compassion and love for the child proved her to be the rightful mother. Mother’s affection to her child is so strong that she just wants to see her child alive no matter what!

Parental love means supporting and

prepares the child for the future. The study shows that the first three years of a child’s life are crucial; the child will develop significant intellectual, emotional and social abilities. This means they are learning gradually; confidence, security, and empathy. At this stage, our guidance and support are much needed but becomes lesser as they grow older. Supports must be consistent; offer words of encouragement and wisdom play an important role. These things will take shape on their future and guide them to become happy and productive citizens. The way how parents bring up the child reflects our love to them. Parents are doing whatever they can… moving heaven and earth to meet the basic demands of the kids, including a proper training. Supports decline when children move out of the family to form his own.
Parental love is an unconditional love and support; that is, not expecting something in return. It is unwavering love and dedication from parents to the children, nurturing and guide their physical, mental and spiritual growth. It is where a deep emotional connection develops; a bond with children that lasts a lifetime. Discipline, while viewing as unpleasant by some children, as long as appropriate and consistent limits for her child demonstrates love. Some kids don’t understand right away, but only later as they grow older and grows upwards. Parents want to ensure the overall health of the child. A parent wants kids to get upward to be responsible, productive, kind and God fearing. Parents always wish for their children’s happiness in a preparation for letting them loose and make the own way of living – and for good. We don’t own our children, we are only their stewards. We will eventually have to set them free. Love for the child is so overwhelming that no matter what the child does, he will always be loved.
Nurturing a child is like training for the future. “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6. Parents always wish for their happiness, peace and harmony. Children need to be loved. Like water lilies and sparrows, they have right to live and be happy. It validates their existence on this planet, making them feel like they are appreciated for who they are. It is an everlasting legacy the parents left behind.

Parental love knows no boundaries. Even the Lord Jesus loves kids. He got angry with his disciples when he noticed that little children were not allowed to come closer to him. Instead, He took the children in his arms and laying his hands on them, blessed them. Consider the passages from Mark 10:13-16

“13 People were bringing their little children with him to have him touch them, and the disciples rebuked them for this.
14 When Jesus noticed it, he was very angry and said, “Let the children come to me and don’t stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.”
16 Then he took the children in his arms and laying his hands on them, blessed them.

It is a parental love…. a love that child needs.

Why Mathematics Needs Imagination

                                                By Vic Odarve

For many students, Math is described as a difficult course and only a few are interested; that is why imagination helps to understand, appreciate, and challenge how this course works. Unknown to many, imagination keeps various mathematical equations and formulas stay in our minds; keeping us to understand how it works in real worlds and of course, their limitations. As Mother Nature expresses her beauty through mathematics, from Newton’s law of motion and Kepler’s laws in revolving planets, imagination keeps us appreciate the beauty and grandeur of our planet and the universe we live in. And a lot more, our imagination would keep us challenged to investigate math secrets and its function in the mysteries the universe has. Understanding math is more like doing an imaginative play than anything else!

Mathematics brings anxiety and stress to students

Math consists of interwoven equations and formulas, and imagination would keep the students considering how math works in tangible worlds. Imagination adds our knowledge in quantum and cosmic worlds because variables or quantities involve in the math equations, develop only in modern science labs and scientific experiments which are often out in our real senses. In quantum mechanics, for instance, particles behave differently from the classical mechanics. In cosmic science, some mathematical formulas and equations developed from years of observation in various astronomical phenomena like an event horizon, a quantum singularity, the expanding universe, the uncertainty principle and many others. But Einstein’s equations, where time is not constant, and his conversion ratio between matter and energy, are clearly a result in imagination. Prediction formulas, too, which are the product of probability and statistics, also come from imagination. Hence, imagination helps us going to get deep into equations with mathematical relationships between different things.

There is no ugly mathematics. Math is always beautiful.

There is no ugly mathematics. Math is always beautiful. The beauty of math can be further appreciated by imagination. Mother Nature teaches us math; from the plant leaves to the cloud formations and the intricate webs of heavenly bodies stretching into the cosmic ocean are mathematical wonders. Beautiful and intricate applications of mathematics are illustrated in the complexities of our natural world such as the golden ratio, Fibonacci sequence, fractals and the honeycomb conjecture. The simple twig of a tree is a fragmented geometric shape, look like the branches which they grow on, which look like the tree itself—a math beautiful expression! Another one is a hexagonal shaped honey combs created by the bee, it is geometry in action. And these are all around us. Mathematical equations give us understanding Mother Nature’s mind and discover how the laws of physics are working. The existence of these laws keeps us appreciate the beauty of understanding mathematics.

Beautiful monuments and natural landscapes are the expression of  mathematics

And much more, imagination would keep us challenged to investigate math further; unlocks some of the secrets and discover the things we don’t yet understand. Some mathematical laws discovered are so strange that keep our mind-boggling and expanding. Through imagination, we are just like playing equations in our mind and think how it works in different circumstances and challenge to solve some of the mathematical problems. Newton and Leibnitz, for example, imagined how to solve areas of figures bounded by several curves, developed integral calculus; Laplace developed the method for solving differential equation; and probability and statistics for gambling or game of chance.

For math-intensive career like engineering, it is through the imagination that students can play around various math equations and formulas. Imagination is a driving force that leads to many inventions and innovations and what brought us to our present state of civilization. Math is not math until it is understood, appreciated, and challenged. And it needs imagination!

Russia and China Play Stakes Game

                                                by Vic Odarve

Just pondering over the checkered board what the best next moves like chess, Russia and China play the dangerous games, that a wrong move lead to a disaster. Russia seems to be in a zugwang, still to find her next move to extricate from difficult positions over the downing of the Malaysian Airline. China, on the other hand, looks for best tactical maneuvers to snatch South China Sea inlets claimed by most of its neighbors and defies the international norm on settling disputes thru United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Both countries play dangerous games!

Now, as the situation develops after the downing of the Malaysian Airlines, which was believed fired by a missile from Moscow supported separatists in Eastern Ukraine, Russia finds it difficult to justify its action particularly to its allies and its opponents- the western countries and United States. Although Europe relies heavily on Russian energy exports, the latest tragedy complicates her position; pushing neighbors away from the orbit of

influence. But still, as the posturing going on after the impressive modern, well trained and fully equipped Russian Army swiftly conquered Crimea, the war-gaming on the Ukrainian border still persists over the past months. The support for the separatists and war games along the Ukrainian border doubted the west on her true intentions. This is a risky maneuver.

On the other hand, China looks to

be campaigning as hard as she can until meeting resistance on its own game over the South China Sea. China, as it spreads out its role in the world economy, engages in territorial disputes with its neighbors in the petroleum-rich South China Sea, and frequent skirmishes with the West over intellectual property publications. A group of disputed islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, also creates friction between the two countries; rejecting proposals to freeze on oil rigging near Vietnam and building what appears like an airstrip in a disputed island near the Philippines also raise tensions in disputed waters.

The world, along with the UN and western allies, are trying hard to make sure the present volatile situation doesn’t escalate. These nations have nuclear weapons, which, if not properly manage, can turn into catastrophe. These flurries of international crises that involve Russia and China seem difficult for the UN and its supporters to respond. China’s deaf ears to settle through UN mediation and Russia’s support for separatists in eastern Ukraine, are breaching the international norms.

As always in world history, the United Nations and the western allies are the last walls to deter the expansions. Red lines establishments, calculated sanctions, and enforcements of the international laws and UN charters are some of the measures to save peace rather than to force military experts to their own drawing boards.

These current situations are very delicate and a mite too late to resolve may result to another apocalypse. Like matter and antimatter which annihilates each other, there are always pros and cons, as violators and abiders to international law. Nobody wants to fight like the World War II. But both Russia and China are now playing a high stakes game!
