Math textbooks- a legacy for the next generation of students

At classroom, you listen intently to your teacher or lecturer. Every word he speaks gathers important information. Observe how he does the steps in solving the problems or exercises. Relax. Take note and ask questions if necessary.

Then at home, it is your turn! Open your notes. Review and study the steps. Recall the reasons why he does it.

Finally, test your understanding! This is the moment! Close the notes and get an extra sheet of paper and solve by yourself. Solve it! If you fail to get the correct answer, open your notes and see where in your way you get wrong. Repeat if you get wrong! Don’t stop doing it until you get it right! It is just like playing the game of “hide and seek”. You hide the solutions of the problems in your notes and seek its answer by solving it by yourself. That’s it!

It’s as simple as that. It is just a pleasure! Practice makes perfect as the saying goes. It holds true!
This simple technique develops a positive thinking. If the final answer is the same as your notes, it gives you confidence. And getting the correct answer raises your adrenalin to a certain level of excitement and joy. Confidence is building up!

Then go out in your study room and relax. See the world outside. It pictures well. It sounds good. You will be in a good mood as if the world is joining your excitements. Happiness for getting the correct answer! That is without seeing the solution from your notes! And you get it right! It is like medicine. It alleviates depression! It fosters positive mood!

Outside the study room, see this beautiful Mayana ricefields.

One of my friends was doing this before our final exam. I met him outside in his house while seeing the beautiful pictures of Chocolate hills of the Philippines, famous Boracay beach, and National Pilgrimage Center of Nigeria managed by Father Edeh at Elele, River State, Nigeria. My friend was singing as if in harmony with the bird’s sweet song on the bough of the trees as sunset faded in the African sky. I told him “Why are you look so happy and smiling, my friend?” What was his answer? “I know now how to derive the famous equation of Einstein, E= mc2 by following the steps from our lecturer. I solve it by myself, without looking my notes” That was his reply. So astonishing was his reply! It caught me by surprise. Indeed, he had learned mathematics in the simplest way! And enjoyed it!

Learning mathematics is a fun-filled activity. It makes the lives of the students better and we, too, the lecturers, are enjoying! Even this simple technique is interesting! I love students come to see me with toothy smiles saying,” Sir, you make our study of mathematics in this university simple and easy. And we enjoy it”.

Fighting the Philippine’s Looting Machines

By  Vic Odarve

Graft and corruptions, tax evasions, and smuggling activities are the looting machines that keep the Philippines a poor country.  To combat this looting machines, the President had accelerated his predecessor’s campaign against graft and corruptions, tax cheaters, and smugglers. To date, several officials have been fired for alleged corruption or

Graft and corruption

misconduct and going extravagant trips. On tax evasion, the government has ongoing tax administration reforms and review of the declared asset and income in the submitted Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth (SALN) of all public officials. Lately, the President also issued a directive to publicly destroy illegally shipped contrabands in the country’s economic zones aimed at deterring smuggling. Thus, a war of nerve emerges… Duterte vs The Looting Machines.

According to a report by Global Financial Integrity, the Philippines lost aboutP19.34 trillion between 1960 and 2011 on graft and corruption and keep on increasing. Big time corrupt officials are from the government offices, bigwigs in our society, and business magnates and oligarchs. Hence, it is not surprising that to date, nearly two dozen officials have been fired for alleged corruption and going on extravagant trips since Duterte came to power two years ago.  The   Bureau of Customs tops the list among the corrupt government officials. Duterte said, “If you go to the national government just to look for an opportunity for money, go look for another job. I will really fire you,” Duterte told employees of the Department of Agrarian Reform on June 20. The Pork barrel scam led by Napoles where billions of pesos were stolen from the Filipino people must be a thing of the past. Corruption remains a significant barrier why we are left behind from our Asian neighbors in economy and progress.

Illegal shipment

On tax evasion, the government has found out that the primary source of corruptions is the BIR examiners in connivance with government officials and politicians and bigwigs in our society. Therefore, the government with all of its power brought to the court all corrupt BIR examiners and government officials and slapped with tax evasion cases. In the previous administration, they impeached former Chief Justice Corona while the current one is the case of Chief Justice Sereno. Tax evasion was also dealing with Rappler and Dunkin’ Donuts of the Prietos, who own the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Erring examiners were put under investigation after being asked to resign if they will not stop corrupt practices. The BIR had also filed before the DOJ three tax evasion cases against homegrown cigarette manufacturer Mighty Corp. and its top executives for a total of P37.9 billion in unpaid excise taxes due to the alleged use of fake tax stamps. Lucio Tan, one of the richest Filipinos, owes the government at least P30 billion in unpaid taxes. And still, there are some other oligarchs in the country doing the same under the government periscope.

The coming of the new generation

Another headache is the smuggling of goods from foreign countries that include basic necessities such as rice, onions, etc. and cars. Lately, the government intercepted expensive cars and motorbikes together with some of the 800 contraband vehicles imported in Cagayan port. Thus, as directed by the President, bulldozers were used to destroy a total of 68 contraband luxury vehicles valued at P277.9 million and 8 luxury motorbikes worth P19.5 million. Among the luxury cars destroyed were Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche Carrera and Mercedez Benz SLK 280.  Since car smugglers still rake in profits from the selling of seized cars, destroying the smuggled luxury vehicles will give them no opportunity to secure them legally through the Bureau of Customs.

The Philippines is a sick man in Asia due to graft and corruption, tax evasion, and smuggling. Since Duterte is not beholden to any of the political, social or economic elites, he can focus his energy to run after these untouchables without fear. Although he has a big foul mouth, Duterte has the will to implement the law for the good of the country. People are fed up with sweet talking politicians for several decades. But one thing of caution to the president: he must always consult and listen to his advisers on critical matters like the case of mayor Espinosa and now on Senator Trillanes before making a public announcement.

Fighting these looting machines is a difficult job. But Duterte has the support from the majority of the Filipinos. Sometimes the scenarios’ give us pain but it must be done for the betterment of the next generations.

Fight the Corruptions, Please, Mr. President!

By  Vic  Odarve

When people paid much attention to his promises during the campaign period, they are less interested simply because politicians are more on talking but less in actions! But not the 6 million voters who embraced his promise to run after the corrupt oligarchs in this country. True to his words, after he won the election, he goes after to these corrupts and brought them to justice. His political will made the government of the Philippines richer by approximately some 6 B from Lucio Tan, 1.7.B from Mile Long Property and 25B from Mighty Cigarettes. It is a painful process but must be done.

Because they make the country poor, people say that tax evaders should be nailed to the cross

Lucio Tan, ranked 501st in Forbes list of the world’s richest billionaires this year with a wealth of $3.7 billion and one of the richest Filipinos, owes the government at least P30 billion in unpaid taxes, according to President Rodrigo Duterte. A row between the Duterte administration and flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) over supposedly unpaid fees was resolved and the government accepted its offer to pay P6 billion worth of navigational fees, and other charges.

This flag carrier does not pay right taxes to the government. Duterte nailed Lucio Tan.

Then comes out the Prieto family for their alleged failure to pay proper taxes and rental. Duterte claimed further that the family allegedly attempted to hold on to the government-owned Mile Long property. A claim is amounting to P1.8 billion. In another development, the Bureau of Internal Revenue filed a P1-billion tax evasion case against Prieto-owned Golden Donuts Inc., the Philippine franchise of Dunkin Donuts. A criminal complaint was filed against GDI for willful attempt to evade or defeat tax and for deliberate failure to supply correct and accurate information about the company’s income tax return and quarterly value added tax return.

Untouchables? This franchise is in hot water.

As the year ended another three tax evasion complaints worth a total of P37.9 billion against the tobacco company, Mighty Corporation. Complainant BIR referred to the approved settlement of Mighty Corporation’s excise tax as well as compromise settlement of all its pending tax-related issues including that of its officers and shareholders. Last July, President Rodrigo Duterte said he had ordered the BIR to accept the settlement money. After the tobacco company settled its liabilities, the government was P40-billion richer.

These new generations are taught to pay the right taxes to the government.

In the Philippine setting, if you have strong connections from the justice departments, and being members of a solid and influential political dynasty, oligarchs may be safe from the bribery and tax evasion charges. Strong political influences do extend its arm in hiding unlawful acts perpetrated by a member of any political dynasties. This is the modern landscape in our country… with the skillful maneuvering may save businessmen/politicians from imprisonment.

Some judges do some favors as personal gratitude as a long- time friends and allies, and for aiding and defending them in their time of difficulties. It is the payback period. That is why some businessmen, despite proof of voluminous files on graft and corruptions for cheating billions of monies, the case drags slowly until it fades off to limbo. Filed cases stand still like time and space in the black hole due to strong gravitational pull.  It is a frustrating scenario to the electorates and voting public in general. Strong connections work!

Mayana ricefields are the works of thy Hands. The farmers toiled every day and yet they paid the right taxes.

Paying right taxes to the government is a duty of every person. Even Pharisees asked a question to Jesus in Matthew 22:17-21, as follows;

“The Pharisees asked Jesus a question: “‘Tell us then, what your opinion is? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’ But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, ‘You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax.’ They brought Him a denarius, and He asked them, ‘Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?’ ‘Caesar’s,’ they replied. Then He said to them, ‘Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

True to his words, after he won the election, he runs after the tax evaders and brought them to justice. His political will made the government of the Philippines richer by billions of pesos…badly needed by the country’s ailing economy. No presidents have touched these oligarchs before. It is a painful process but must be done. Go after the tax evaders, please!

Advise our President, Please!

                  By Vic Odarve

It is the president’s adviser role …to advise and make recommendations to the president on all crucial issues facing the nation’s policies. These people must be heavily involved in all policy areas and attuned to the needs of the president on the key issues. More so, advisers are responsible for his good image both in and out of the country’s spectrum; knew exactly the direction what the president wanted in our domestic and foreign policy. Advise our president, please!

Press briefing by the President

Press briefing by the President

Presidential speeches, whether done in local and international settings, must be reviewed and filtered so as not to create different interpretations from the media men, supporters, and foes; and distort the true meaning on what the president wants to project. Local and idiomatic expressions, which often the source of misunderstanding, if possible, must be controlled. Such was the case after the ASEAN forum …confrontation between the president and press people during the press conference.

In like manner, presidential decisions both on domestic and international issues seemed to convey more questions than what the citizens are expecting. Whether politically motivated or not, the advisers must see to it that these decisions may not create chaos and confusions among the Filipinos. Such was the case of Marcos burial and our policy towards America and ASEAN neighbors.

Harvesting rice in Mayana- Beautiful scenery is the work of His Hands

The President’s life is not as beautiful as this scenery in Mayana

In almost all head of states like a president, a team of advisers plays an important role in their decisions. The president and advisers have to dance in tango…a harmony in every step. The president growing problems in giving controversial statements and his decisions in some of our domestic issues can be addressed with advisers who knew well what the president’s wanted directions. On the other hand, the President is obligated to consult his advisers before making decisions.

Speeches, whether colorful, sarcastic or not or deemed inappropriate for public consumption, must be addressed; and decisions, whether politically motivated, payback after elections or not, must also be discussed with his advisers.

Advise him, please!

Connection Works!

                                                by Vic Odarve

Due to the perennial problems of unemployment, salary increases and promotions, and business transactions, people look a connection to politicians, celebrities and government officials, and other among the country’s bigwigs for help or assistance. In finding a job, for instance, whether government or private corporations, it is whom you know and not what you know that matters most. These connections also pull salary increases and promotions. In business transactions, connections provide a loophole to facilitate faster on the paper processing. Connections to people in higher positions really work!

Napoles entangled three senators due to connection

Napoles entangled three senators due to connection

Nowadays, employment is easier if somebody introduces you and follow up your application. It is like politics in motion. With so many applicants, connection to a person with higher position or country’s stalwarts and bigwigs prevails over qualification, work experiences, and skills. Politicians and government officials often dictate the vacant positions; hence their families and relatives and those with connections come first. That is why parents with children searching for a job in the future build up connection with politicians and influential people. Job would be easier later.

Promotions and salary increases, the vital indicators of your working performances come easily if you have someone influential within the organization. They will recommend, assess, evaluate your work, then salary or promotion follows. Such was a case of an electrician for having somebody with a close connection with the company’s president. He received an unprecedented huge salary increase that a few months later his fellow workers, upon discovery, resign from their jobs because of dismay and discouragement. Today, we understand why many of our co-workers

These new generation of parents and children know how connection affects the moral fabric and trust.

prepare cakes and pastries, offer helps and expensive gifts that please our boss, especially on their birthdays, anniversaries, etc. just to establish connections.

Whether in government or private corporations, the connection works. In government, for instance, a business permit requires approval from a layer of offices; takes longer time and sometimes red tape. But with connections to these offices, usually officials and relatives, it is just as simple as eating peanut… no need to participate in the long queue for paper processing.

Old generation did not had any connection

Old generation did not had any information on how the connection works

The world today seems to be cruel as the poor becomes poorer while rich becomes richer. Because of connection, it is usually the poor that suffer much depriving of employment, salary increases, and promotion. Although connection is an art of corruption in a peaceful way, in a larger sense it is synonymous to graft and bribery. Like Janet Napoles, she set up parties for politicians and bigwigs in society to establish connections. She and the three senators entangled with the law and ended in jail for graft and corruption.

Just like Einstein’s theory of relativity space-time warps and bends in the presence of mass and energy, connection destroys the moral fiber of the population and trust of the people to the government. It contradicts our values and principles; shapes a different outlook on our life. Although often perceive as a bribe, the connection still works!

Landslides Paralyze a Village

ODARVE'S NOTEBOOK IN THE PHILIPPINES

By Vic Odarve

Like volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis; landslides also paralyze a village where it occurs.

Landslide is characterized by a descent of a mass of earth and rock down a mountain slope due to gravity. The instability of the slope is sometimes triggered by earthquakes and heavy rains. Earthquakes may have caused stress, damage, and eventually weaken the foundation of rocks and earth of the mountain slopes. And during heavy rain, water seeps through cracks and pore spaces in underlying foundation, and encounters a layer of slippery material, such as limestone or clay. Thus, water-saturated soil becomes like liquid mud, an effect called liquefaction, and finally cracks the earth and stone formation of the slopes. If the support is not strong, the upper surface of these softened and well-lubricated layers of mass of earth and rock slides down due to gravity, thus a landslide occurs.
