Feeling Being Loved is a True Happiness

                 By Vic Odarve

“My husband wants to die in my arms”, said Celine Dion, who took time off from singing engagement to care for her husband, René Angélil, who is battling throat cancer. “But when you have family around and knows he is being loved, I think it helps tremendously”, she added.

Kids feel they are being loved

Kids feel they are being loved

Feeling being loved is a true happiness. Although fame, wealth, and pleasure make people happy, the feeling of being loved is a true happiness. Feeling being loved by your family, friends and relatives give a pleasant emotions. Also being loved by a community where you live in brings peace of mind; inspire to help others. More so, doing work that you truly love give strength and generates ingenuity. Experiencing of being loved and loving on what you are doing in life is a true happiness.

Happiness enables us to hurdle the ups and downs

Happiness fuels us to thrive in ups and downs of life.

Feeling being loved by our loved ones, family, friends and relatives affect us physically and mentally in countless ways. The happiness provides us with the fuel to thrive in the high and lows we encounter on our journey as human beings. It is the feeling of being loved that enable us to lift up over tragedies, sufferings, or painful moments of life. The feeling we got   through the spoken voice and written words and other expressions of supports keep our world go round. Like the husband of Celine Dion, although anguishing in pain over his sickness, but dying over in her arms, is itself an experience of true happiness. Feeling being loved is all that matters!

Doing something that gives you pleasure

Doing something that gives you pleasure

Doing charitable works in society, and living morally upright, turn out to be a true happiness. You will be loved by the people; a feeling that gives a sense of fulfillment of the purpose of your life; you know what you live for. Feeling loved cheers your life as a member of the society. The helping of the needy, poor, and those who have less in life and never expecting in return is God’s wisdom. Mother Theresa of India has done such thing; bringing help to suffering humanity. It is a true happiness.

With family around, it brings happiness

With family around, it brings happiness

More so, doing work that you truly love gives strength and generates ingenuity. This is a true happiness. The love of what you are doing keeps you consistently perform at higher levels. Your work gives you less stress. Edison, Einstein, and Newton, have something in common…they truly loved their work. Because of the work and dedication, the scientific world owes much from them since the invention of light bulbs to the theory of relativity and gravity in Physics. They do enjoy their job, and that’s why they are creative and resourceful —because they are.

While normal happiness derives from fame, wealth, and pleasure is dependent on material things that may lose in a blink of an eye, true happiness from feeling being loved can be felt by all walks of life…poor and rich alike. Feeling being loved gives fulfilling lives; brings peace to your mind, heart and soul. It is incomparable to happiness that material things bring. “Even I have a hectic work schedule, I go back once a month to help my dad and mom in the province to clean the house. I could buy everything for me, but could not ever even compare their love for me to any parents out there”, confessed one of the professors in a university. Feeling being loved really matters.

Staying Together

Staying Together

Feeling being loved gives us the true happiness that keeps us growing stronger to pace ourselves the ups and downs of life. Whether we are born poor, rich, and famous, feeling being loved is experiencing a true happiness!

If you feel nobody cares or loves you, you are worthless and your existence is awful to describe!

Blatant Display of Abuse of Power

                                                          By Vic Odarve

Sometimes we have to pay an attention to tiresome people that hit world headlines. Authoritarian rule continues sacking political rivals who are threat to his government; political warlords and members of their dynasty break the rules of legal regulations and ordinances; and wealthy business moguls and their family members seem to be worshipped like God. These pictures and many incidents are examples of blatant oppression of the poor by the powerful.

President Putin of Russia

President Putin of Russia

Recently, Russian President Putin has acted an iron hand to its political opponent Alexei Navalny. In the final judgment, Alexie was sentenced to five-year prisons on fabricated charges with stealing a small amount of money on the sale of timber. This man is really a thorn to Putin; responsible in exposing high level of corruption in the country; organizers of anti-Putin demonstrations following the disputed parliamentary and presidential elections; and charismatic

blogger and activist-thus plenty of followers. As such he could not run for public office; thus Putin has successfully removed Navalny from formal politics.

While in North Korea, Dictator Kim Jong II brutally killed his powerful uncle, who had been considered as second in command, for allegedly attempting to overthrow the state; his uncle was

stripped naked, thrown into a cage, and eaten alive by a pack of ravenous dogs. These are blatant displays of abuse of power.

Not only the authoritarian rulers demonstrate their abusive powers, Philippine political warlords and dynasty, sometimes close their eyes to the established laws and regulations. Last Nov. 30, 2013, as the main gate was already closed after 10 PM, Makati Mayor

Vice President Binay

Vice President Binay

Junjun Binay, together with his sister, Senator Nancy, was advised to use the other exit gate at the posh Dasmariñas Village in Makati City.

“Don’t you know me?” Mayor Junjun Binay said. The mayor berated the gate guards, and his escort brandishing firearms as they got down from their vehicles. The three security guards were reportedly arrested and detained by officers of the Makati Police on orders of the Mayor. And finally, after the incident, the father who is the Vice President, merely said”, A little courtesy for the mayor, please.” It is a blatant oppression of the poor by the powerful.

Sometimes even the family members of influential business tycoon think they are worthy of worship… live higher than Pharaohs and kings. A month ago, a Korean Air heiress Cho Hyun-ah berated a flight attendant in front of other passengers, made him kneel before her and ordered the pilot to take the plane back to the gate to let him off. The plane was about to take off at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. A dismay to a traveling public! After the incident, her father who is the owner and chair of the airline company, apologized in public and called her daughter “foolish.” A display of abuse of power!

Since biblical times, the mighty and powerful live in a fabulous and lavish lifestyle, and have the power over life and death of an individual. Some of these men don’t even deserve pity; they stain themselves with the blood of the innocents; they live like a king and princes, but like everyone else, they will perish and return to the dusts.

Money; A Source of Evil or a Blessing?

                                            By Vic Odarve

Like a coin with two sides, money can be either an evil or a blessing. Money can make your life easier; sustains your family everyday needs, spending children’s education, and many more. It can be considered as a gift from God and spending it wisely can be used to bless others; hence makes somebody holy. However, unwise handling may lead to a world of chaos and desperation….. downfall of oneself. Money is indeed a double sharp bladed sword and truly powerful!

Billionaire Bill Gates

Billionaire Bill Gates

Everybody needs money. No doubt. An evangelist requires his supporter to give tithes in a form of money to sustain his preaching activity and payment of the slot in radio and television. Sectarian schools raise money to improve educational programs and meet the demands of the changing environments pertaining to education. To some extent, most people need money to pay their pension plan and open a savings account because no one really knows how long a person lives. We are getting older about the passing years and the savings can be used when we cross that awful frail “elderly” age. It is a reality that everyone must accept. It could be a deplorable state if without a money.

New Year’s Day Celebration-Father Edeh feeds thousands of pilgrims

However, when viewed as a gift from God, we can be closer to Him…carrying out our responsibility as Christian to share generously with the less fortunate brothers. God does command… be your brother’s keeper! Billionaires like David Rockefeller, Ted Turner, Michael Bloomberg, had set up foundations and/or partnership programs “saving lives” everywhere their money reaches; heavily donated to depopulation efforts and charities to the needy. In Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Edeh, one of the most revered men of God and one of a powerful and influential religious leader in Africa, establishes several educational institutions to provide opportunities for the handicapped and less privileged members of the society to acquire education free of charge; demonstrate practical and effective charity that will lead to peace in the heart of many in the modern world. These are truly works of God and these make them brother’s keeper!

Father Edeh of Nigeria

Yes, money too, is dangerous. Money becomes evil when people love it more than God. People fall into temptation and trap into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge their lives into ruin and destruction; wandered from the faith of God and this led to their downfall.  You become a slave and money is your master. The craving for wealth and possessions can lead into all kinds of temptation. Because of this, people often spend nights of cocktails drinking and dancing with friends to the extent that they deprive their families of love and attention.

Hence, money can be either evil or a blessing. It really depends on how people spend it. Those who have been blessed with wealth like Bill Gates and Father Edeh who shared generously with the poor saw money as a vehicle to be used to serve our Maker. But for those who love money to finance and support terrorist activities put themselves in damnation. In the end of days, somebody will come to judge the living and the dead;

20 He who has declared all this says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”
Amen! Come, Lord Jesus. Revelation 22:20

The choice is yours and is irrevocable; to spend money wisely or not, for we will see Him face to face in the final judgment.

The Pharisees in our Modern Time!

                                             By Vic Odarve

Like in biblical days when Jesus condemned the hypocritical Pharisees, we also often see these people in our society today. Only, they are clever than before! They are very religious people, but a conduit to a politician and sometimes a bagman for corrupt government officials. Some are holding an important government position but govern the constituents with an iron hand dictatorial rule. Still others are widely known TV evangelists who often eloquently interpret the biblical messages, but they did not do what they preach. Pious outside, but rotten inside! They are the Pharisees in our modern time!

Queen of pork barrel scam Napoles

Queen of pork barrel scam Napoles

They are, indeed, very religious. Observe the church during Sunday masses! They occupy the front seats; do bible reading, and active in religious organizations. They donate monies and even do some charitable works and finance some religious activities. They loved to be recognized and greeted everywhere, even in the churches and the marketplaces. But on the other side, they are the conduits of siphoning billions of money in connivance with the corrupt government officials. Such was the case of the pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles. She claimed that she has been praying the rosary 2,000 times a day and has been doing this even before the onset of the pork barrel scam saga. Her white colored rosary which carries a papal seal, as she claimed, was a gift from the late Pope Saint John Paul II during the latter’s visit to the Philippines in 1995. Now, she is languishing in jail. She is indeed a very religious, a modern Pharisee.

The Pharisees

The Pharisees

Modern Pharisees, too, are holding great positions either in governments or in private corporations and establishments. They urge the constituents to turn into God and adopt the values of religion to their lives; otherwise, they would face a moral crisis. Although some are tied with hectic government functions, they find means to do some pilgrimage in holy places in order to make sense of their world into something approaching wholeness as Christians. But on the other side, they rule their constituents with an iron-fisted dictatorship; everyone would not dare to speak out in the open

Russian President Mr. Putin is religious but warlike

against the regime for fear of imprisonment, including the oligarch and super rich opted to remain silent. Several years ago when Putin was elected president, he urged Russians to return to God and strengthen a new national identity based on conservative and traditional values such as the Orthodox church, warning that the west was facing a moral crisis. In 2002, the President made a pilgrimage to Orthodox holy places and prayed together with thousands of inhabitants. Today he is doing an oppressive rule like Stalin of old Russia. And last March, he gobbled Crimea, and recently Putin said he could “take Kiev in two weeks” if he wanted, and threatens to use nuclear weapons if Ukrainian forces continue to fight pro-Russia separatists. A Pharisee in our modern times!

Sadly, we also hear of Christian leaders who have gone wrong. Although, some pointed out that there is no branch of the Christian church with leaders are ever immune to cases such as adultery, corruption, and other unethical practices; these are all dishonoring to God. These Christians evangelists preach the gospel with fervor, but in reality, they did not do what they preach; they betray every word they speak. They often have power of great persuasion and getting waves of diehard followers. Some have operated schools, congregation and ministries, and even television shows and programs all over the globe. Such was the case of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy International church, had divorced his wife. Rev. Anita had filed for divorce in a London court on the grounds of “unreasonable behavior”, “adultery” and several other allegations on August 29, 2014. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome and wife, Anita, are no doubt one of the most famous couple-pastors in Nigeria.

As always in history from the time of Christ to the present, the picture repeats itself. But as technology advances the Pharisees are more pious outside and more rotten inside. Their footprints in the bible refuse to die in the minds of the people! Watch out. These modern Pharisees are coming in great numbers!

Ideal Family; an Elusive Dream

                                                By Vic Odarve

Although all families can be strong and healthy, only a few seem to have it “together” while other families seem to struggle with pain in keeping their own. An ideal family is a place of love whose members are bonded together by cheerful and loving parents, socially and academically successful children. The family members share pleasant things and work as a unit, and parents manage disagreements constructively through effective communication. But in the real world, only a few succeeded; for others, an ideal family remains a dream and imagination.

Everyone has its own family but a perfect one remains an elusive dream

In an ideal family, parents as prime mover must provide comfort and emotionally fulfill to all members. They must be cheerful and loving and spend a positive time together with the kids, and in the process build their wonderful feelings and relationship. Talking, planning, and working certain things together build strong family ties. Since every individual is unique and disagreements arise, conflicts must be dealt constructively. Effective communication provides an emotional and sound environment.

Outstanding family results in a well knitted and strong children’s relationship bonded together by love. They look their parents as a model. They should love each other the same as their father loves their mother. They learn how their parents do everything to keep the family connected and bonded together; how activities are managed and controlled to make the world going around harmoniously.

An ideal family is like a beautiful sunset

But in married life, it is not always a picture of beautiful sunsets; sometimes the journey is rough and temptation abounds along the way. When I visited a friend of mine a few days ago, his family seemed perfect; the beautiful home with three kids, beautiful cars of the latest model, beautiful wife managing a good company; everything, as it would appear, was perfect. And he was just promoted to an executive in a big company; his career in high gear. But spending a weekend with them, I noticed their family was not a happy one. There seemed to be a feeling of disunity among them, negative attitude of the children is clear, and love insecurity, etc.…. The wholesome relationship was obviously missing… an ingredient that cannot be filled up with all the material things and work successes they have possessed.

Sometimes couples’ relationship and life satisfaction set off to its lowest point; turns sour, humiliation, distress, troubling, sleepless nights, and if not well attended, ended in divorce and separation. Even kings, princes, and celebrities in our society separated their wives or husbands one after the other. In 1527 King Henry VIII of

Happy moment

A happy moment

England, after feeling dissatisfaction in giving birth to his wife, a son, separated from his wife Catherine and married Anne Boleyn. This act was not approved by Rome and after years of conflicting views, England established their own Anglican Church. There are celebrities, too, that have been very successful in their careers, but not so successful with their marriages. One of them is famous Elizabeth Taylor, who has taken sacred vows eight times and still found the ideal family elusive.

Henceforth, for several people, the search for ideal family exists only in imagination. The commitment of love and dedication for husband and wife and children is simply out of the spectrum; numerous culprits wreak havoc on the relationship which finally leads to an ugly end… to divorce and separation. When parents separate, it creates a great pain in the whole family, but as time passes, children learn to adjust and understand that family life is not at all ideal!

Are Gifts Blessing Or Bribe?

By Vic Odarve

Like light which behaves both as particle and wave, gifts are also dual in nature. Gifts could mean a blessing or a bribe to a giver or receiver. Both scenarios are possible. It depends on how we perceive them! It depends on its environs where it acts.

Adventure at Niger Delta, Nigeria, Africa

Adventure at Niger Delta, Nigeria, Africa

A mom told her son,”Son, you must have to visit your teacher/lecturer on his birthday. Bring this gift and greet him happy birthday”. The package consisted of imported wine and perfume. “What’s wrong? We did not ask and it is heartily given?” the lecturer reasoned out.

Some politicians, too, with monies screw from public funds, play like a god or paternalistic landlord. They distribute cash in millions as gifts to their voters. Those closer to their hearts receive larger windfalls! In return, people regard them as if they are lords as if they are gods in their districts as if they are God’s gifts to humanity. “What’s wrong? We did not ask and it is heartily given?” the people reasoned out.

A year ago, a wife of one lecturer got angry when he refused to give gifts to his boss and predicted: “You’ll never be promoted on your job as a lecturer and receive no salary increase if you don’t know how to give gifts!” Sure enough, the lecturer never got any promotion during his decade-long of teaching at the university. He was not among the chosen ones to be promoted and received a salary increase. In the group, he possessed the highest teaching qualifications. Gifts establish a connection to your bosses for a favored action.

A gift is a gift and nothing more. But a politician who gives a gift to the voters or a student who gives a gift to his lecturers/teachers is another thing. A gift is no longer a gift! It is a bribe for a vote in the coming election for a politician and also a bribe to facilitate a passing grade for a student by the lecturer/teacher. For a boss would mean a promotion and salary increase to his/her subordinates.

A gift is defined as something that is bestowed, usually to give pleasure or show gratitude while bribery is the illegal influencing of any person in the exercise of a public duty through the payment of money or anything of value.

Bohol, Philippines adventure

Bohol, Philippines adventure

To distinguish whether a gift is a bribe or not is a very difficult. In math, these two variables are functions of the motives of the giver and receiver and value of the gifts. A gift is given without any expectation of gain while in bribery a favor is expected. More often ‘a gift can be disclosed, a bribe needs to be concealed.

This is the usual perception. The definition becomes clearer if we know closely on the motives and subsequent actions of both parties that follow the gift giving. The value of the offer can be determined, but the motives can be deceptive and difficult to discern.  Most often bribery makes its debut under the cloak of gifts. Sometimes it depends on country’s culture where there be a hairline differences between gifts from bribes. Not all gift-giving is bribery.

Some cultural customs of the country consider commissions, honorariums, give away, incentives, and consultation fees as gifts while others as bribes. These also spell the difference.

Bribes are close relatives to corruptions. Corrupt people permeate the world. Look at some famous people in the world today. Proven guilty, they are facing plunder charges in connection with bribes, corruption, scandals, scam, etc. Some of them are presidents, senators, congressman, and politician. The common denominator- they are allegedly receiving bribes, kickbacks, incentives, etc. in the form of gifts. Whatever the things they receive they call them gifts or blessings!

Corruption, which is the most hated social problems and difficult to eradicate, sometimes emanating from one’s own cultural background. It can starve investment of public-improvement projects and instead; fattened the pockets of the corrupt officials.

Though the practice is culturally rooted, a genuine political will allow checks and balances, transparency, and independent scrutiny. In some instances, these actions may act as sort of remedy in curbing corruption.

Lecturers, populace, bosses or superiors always claim in the chorus that what they receive are gifts, not bribes. Whatever the perceptions, a gift like a light in the science of Physics, has dual nature; that is, it can be a blessing or a bribe. The judgment in receiving gifts as ethical, proper, appropriate or blessing is yours and it is irrevocable. The book of Revelation reveals everything, as follows; Rev 22:11-12;

11 Let the sinner continue to sin and the defiled remain in his defilement; let the righteous continue to do what is right and he who is holy grow holier.”

12 “I am coming soon, bringing with me the salary I will pay to each one according to his deeds.

So be it! And glory to God in the Highest.

My Math Visitor

By Vic Odarve

Except for private institutions, the country’s federal state universities and colleges were plagued with teachers’ union strike. Students stayed at their homes waiting for trouble to settle and resume their classes afterward. But one student refused to stop her schooling!

So I am lucky to teach in one of the private universities. No teachers’ union strike!

Engineering Mathematics 1

Engineering Mathematics 1

In one of my visit to the university library to read some local newspaper, one of the students approached and requested me to have some explanation on the math solutions previously discussed in the classroom. “Okay, what part of the topic?” I told her. She opened her notes and showed the steps where she got the problems and I did the explanation and discussion. Satisfied, she said, “Thank you, Sir, I understand already”, she said. Then I said,” How was the result of your last quiz?” “I got 90 % score, Sir”, she smiled. “Good, and on next quiz you must get a perfect score”, I replied. Then she slowly walked quietly and slip away. I paid little attention. She got a good score. So nothing to worry!  She may just serious enough and want to do more on her study every day.

Family tour-Chocolate hills,Philippines

Then, the next quiz came. Only 5 out of 234 students in a class got a perfect score. And she was one of them!

It was then that I gave her an attention. I noticed that during the class session, she sat at the end of the last row of the seats in a packed and overcrowded room. She listened intently and focused to my discussion. No friend, no talking even on her seatmates as if she knew none of her classmates! “She must be too shy”, I guessed.

The semester math course was about to finish. I gave the final quiz before the final exam. “This would be the last quiz”, I told the students. Then what was the result? She got perfect score again! She had done it! “She is a good performing student”, I told myself.

The next meeting I returned the quiz scripts. She was absent. For almost two weeks, I could no longer see her. Then I inquired the course representative and her classmates what happened to this girl. To my surprise, none of her classmates knew her. She vanished and I received no word from her and her whereabouts! I am completely blank!

After two weeks my phone rang. The girl informed me that she returned to her school at the federal university since the teachers’ strike was over. She thanked and told me that she learned and enjoyed math during her stint in my class. It was then I knew that she was my math- visitor. She was not my student! She refused to stop schooling! Then she returned to where she belonged!

Mount Hermon; A Mysterious Mountain

By Vic Odarve

Let us discover Mount Hermon. Known for its majestic beauty, this mountain is approximately 2,814 above the sea level. It borders Israel, Syria, and Lebanon. It is the main source of the Jordan River. Mount Hermon is a very large triple peaked mountain. One of its three summits is the highest point on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea. This mountain is believed to be the site of the transfiguration of Jesus Christ. In the book of Enoch, this mountain is also the site that the 200 fallen angels descended from heaven. These events have profound impacts among the religious faithful; Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Why these events happen on this mountain remain a mystery.

Transfiguration is a dramatic change in appearance. In mathematical language, this is similar to transformations! A change of forms in expressions or formulas that makes our mathematical calculations simpler and easier! That’s why we have logarithms, Laplace, Fourier, Mellin and Z transformations!

Jesus also does transformation. A dramatic change of appearance or transfiguration! It was witnessed by the apostles. He transforms to other dimensions – from earthly appearance to spiritual or heavenly dimension of existence. Among the twelve disciples, only Peter, James, and John had witnessed their Master dramatically transfigured. This transfiguration reveals his glory as the son of God. A true nature of his divine existence!

By transfiguration, Jesus gives his disciples a glimpse of what he looks like when he will be on his kingdom with his Father. Just a glimpse! See what happened! Jesus face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light! Below are the verses taken from Matthew 17: 1-2;

1 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain where they were alone.
2 Jesus’ appearance was changed before them: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became bright as light.

This thing happened at Mount Hermon….a mysterious mountain!

There were two hundred fallen angels descended to Earth at the summit of Mount Hermon. These watchers as they are called in the book of Enoch mated with humans. This class of spiritual beings was in charged with the observance and study of creation. And what happened? They transgressed by intermarrying with humanity and introducing forbidden technologies to earth.
They saw that daughters of Adam were beautiful and good looking. All of them took unto themselves wives. This was against God’s law as angels did not need to procreate like humans. As a punishment they could not go back to heaven anymore. These angels violated both their own nature and their office. God cannot forgive their sins. Having families, these angels taught their human wives charms, enchantments, astrology, cutting of roots and acquainted with plants, sorcery, and others.

Since then, these fallen angels were living on and around the area of Mount Hermon. Their hybrid children were monstrous giants called Nephilim. The aftermath of these giants was awful. Upon their death, they would release evil or demonic spirits that will remain bound to the earth. Since then, mankind won’t have any peace. That’s why we have demons and evil spirits.
It was believed that the tribe of Dan which the Antichrist will come from moved to this area during the days of the Judges. They adopted the Canaanite worship of these angels. Caanites Gods, Baal and Ashtaroth, have the origin at Mount Hermon! Following are taken from the book of Enoch 6: 1-3;

And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: ‘Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.’ And they were in all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it.

Again, this happened at Mount Hermon…. A mysterious mountain!

Today this mysterious mountain is one of the hot spots in Middle East. Christians, Muslims, and Jews have contested this mountain for thousands of years. After the 1967 Six-Day war, both Syria and Israel administered military posts on Mount Hermon’s slopes.

Today, thousands of visitors come and visit this mysterious mountain! Some folks believe that this mysterious mountain is one of the Earth’s portals to other universes. A gateway to another world! Nobody knows!

Keep Your Big Mouth Shuts!

           by Vic Odarve

When Joseph visited Dr. Martin’s clinic for HIV patients, some of his friends spotted him. So in a party held for the employees a week later, somebody asked him if he had an HIV. Joseph jokingly said, “Yes, that’s why you had seen me at the clinic last Tuesday”. He just talked without bothering it! Joseph actually had no HIV but merely visited the doctor for some business not related to his health. But when he reported to work the next day, almost everybody thought that he was infected with HIV. The news grew rapidly like a wildfire! “It is horrible!” he said. The news amplified and became unpleasant to his ears when somebody asked him on his health. That was it. It started as a joke and appeared out of control!

Keep our big mouth shuts!

Keep our big mouth shuts!

In one of a work happy hour, Mary shared her stories to the group that school management approved her scholarship abroad. Then somebody asked her question,”What if you will be hired to teach at that university with much higher salary?”Then she replied without bothering herself,”Well, I have to accept the offer”. That was it! A little rumor developed! But to her surprise the message amplified and spiraled to a proportion that it reached to the management. A few days later, her boss called her to his office. The school management cancelled her engineering doctorate scholarship in London.

So, better keep your mouth shuts next time!

See what happened. Joseph felt irritated when friends asked about his health. It brought an unpleasant atmosphere to his working environment. On the other hand, School management cancelled Mary’s scholarship for no apparent reasons. Their common denominator: Both did not keep their big mouths shut!

Biblical story, too, reminds us that it is better to keep out our mouth shuts. Abraham kept his mouth shut from the day he received the message to sacrifice Isaac until the final moments when the angel intervened.

Life is what we make it. Perhaps some intimate details in our lives are better left unsaid. Keep it from public knowledge! Even to our best friends! Or make second thoughts if we want to divulge! By keeping some vital information to ourselves is a safer option than risking ourselves to the outside world. We will soon realize that this world is much wider than just what we know to be our own.

So, keep your big mouth shuts!

The Joy of Helping Others

               By Vic Odarve

My office is open to all students except on some special occasions. And one day, a student came to my office asking assistance on how to derive the famous Einstein equation E= mc2. Upon recognizing that he was not my student, I asked him “How do you know that I can derive the equation?”My friend told me, Sir”, he replied warily.

Final Exam

              Fr. Edeh’s Arch Exam room

Then on another occasion, students came to my office bringing laptops and asking more tips on solving problems on matrices, statistics, and linear programming using MS Excel. The same thing: most of them were not my students! Then I asked them, “How do you know that I can help you?”Our friends told us, Sir”, they replied in unison.

“No problem”, I said to myself. I love to help students. A little help would mean a lot to them. These students are resourceful and they are making the best of things while I am still in this university.

                  Seminar Workshop

Then one day somebody knocked my office door. I was surprised. He was not a student! He was a university teacher and an owner of a mall in the community. He requested for a website design offering assistance for campus students! I was overwhelmed! I was wondering how he got the information. Without asking questions and hesitation, I made one for him! Later I found out   that students told him that I am making a website for free.

That was it! I designed a website for free. It was a good website design and it attracted students’ attention. It became a big hit in the campus! The news spread like a wildfire in the entire university. Students were asking who design the website! The word was spreading.

Madonna University, Elele Campus, Rivers State, Nigeria

Madonna University, Elele Campus, Rivers State, Nigeria

After a few months and upon their request, I conducted a seminar on website design inside in the campus. The seminar drew much attention to students and community people alike. There I found myself speaking in a huge crowd that I never expected. My heart filled with joy. I could see on their faces how happy the students and community people were!

That’s how the things started. From a student who came to know the E= MC2 and ended on a seminar engagement on website design!

This is life. A little help makes a big difference to our neighbors. Just by helping others freely without expecting something in return! Helping others by sharing your knowledge gives you a happiness that money can’t buy. The events become the opportunity for growth. It motivates us to do more and make our life fulfilling.
