A Little Help That Boni Would Never Forget

By Vic Odarve

One summer afternoon while on the bus stop station, the man overheard a familiar voice alongside the bus terminal. As he went down from the local bus, he carefully looked to the crowd of passengers and street vendors. Boni instantly recognized him at once. Caught in mild surprise, he asked, “Oh Boni, I think you are schooling, why are you here? He merely inclined his head and confided later that he was advised to stop schooling by his parents, and instead, looked for a job.

International Convention as Speaker

Boni was undoubtedly on his concluding years in high school. The man and Boni’s family were very closed neighbors in the local village. The man learned that Boni instantly abandoned his class almost a week since he could not attend the ongoing final exam due to unpaid tuition fee and that his father was sick. Hence, he decided to stop schooling. “But why not ask the principal to have a promissory note and take the final exam? “the man refuted. Boni modestly replied that he had tried, but his request was not granted.

As the man drove away, the innocent picture of this adolescent boy kept on playing on his mind back and forth that convinced him to see Boni’s parents. Boni’s parents were one of his best friends and a neighbor for around 30 years. Upon arrival on their local village, he visited

their parents. On their engaging conversation, the parents admitted their son’s stoppage in schooling. The man also learned that the family is struggling in pain over the local school financial obligations. Without hesitation, the man did offer a little financial assistance for the tuition fee and advise them to let their son to go back to the class, take the final exam, and complete high school education. In return, the parents humbly thanked him for his needed help.

Finally, the son returned to the class, took the exam, and successfully attended the graduation ceremony.

Ten years had passed. The man had virtually forgotten the incident when he received a letter from Boni, the village’s neighbor’s son. It fondly recalled that summer afternoon when he was selling goods as street vendor in a bus terminal and how he convinced his parents at his village home to resume

Boni’s residential house

his study. On top of that was an enclosed round-trip ticket to Davao City and humbly asking the man to be one of the main sponsors on his wedding day held in one of the most glamorous hotels in the city. At that place, the man met Boni and his wife, his parents, and together with the bride entourage, spent their time in one of the momentous moments in their life.

The young man is now the project engineer of the DPWH with main office in Davao city. He is a Civil Engineer.

This humble man never foresaw the turn of events. For him it was just a little help but somehow did touch someone’s life.

Politician’s Credibility Counts a Lot

 By Vic Odarve

Politicians and few elites in our society often do not practice what they preach; not honest and fair in dealing with others; put themselves first before taking care for others and making promises but do not fulfill them. If their credibility is challenged, most people lose their trust and often feel betrayed, stop coming to you for help and prefer others. It suffers lasting negative impacts. Their credibility counts a lot!

These people are not consistent in their words and their actions. They are constantly shifting and reversing their decisions. Most politicians during campaign period preached every citizen must be vigilant on any corruption in the government offices. But afterward, once elected, these leaders develop a narrow world view and begin to limit options. This is what happen to the ABS CBN. Several analysts believed that Speaker Cayetano was hitting two birds with one stone. Instead of investigating the tax fraud and several questions on their operations as broadcasting network, the house speaker insisted the approval of provisional franchise to operate for 6 months while awaiting their franchise application. For most people, aside from supporting the rich and powerful, there is something more than what have inspired him. After few weeks, numerous media expose reveal that he is one of the stockholders of the company. They also believed the network would do some favor on the coming election campaign period. This politician did not practice what he preached. He is not a credible.

Honesty speaks well to credible individuals. When the Senator explained that she did not get any cents from the drug lords in the Bilibid prison, the opinion polls survey showed that most people believed the opposite. De Lima was accused of being involved in the proliferation of illegal drugs at the New Bilibid Prison during her stint as justice secretary. She is accused of conspiring with a high-profile inmate, Peter Co who presumably gave the former Justice Secretary P3-M and a vehicle in exchange for allowing illegal drugs into the national penitentiary. She is lying to the public; hence, she was not honest. She is not credible. Her credibility kills!

A person with questionable credibility cannot be trusted. Credible leadership hinges on trust. Senator Manny Pacquiao, who receives fees and royalties from boxing fights and had a tv show in ABS CBN, twisted his neck and support the network franchise renewal. The similar thing for Senator Pangilinan, whose spouse is stockholder and talent of the network with many years of broadcast, movies and shown earning fees and royalties. Despite the network alleged P3.3 trillion pesos unpaid liabilities to the government as pointed out by FICTAP Chairman Tamano, these two senators supported the company known to be the home of the ruling oligarchs and an altar to corrupt politicians. These senators are not credible. Their credibility kills!

Majority of these people are gifted persons who talk with strong and remarkable persuasion like Hitler and Marcos. They often play as right hand to those in powers; influence the company’s owners, its relatives, inner circles, celebrities, and government officials, and among the institution’s bigwigs; and allow themselves serving as a conduit for kickbacks and corruptions.

If your credibility is challenged, most people lose their trust and often feel betrayed, stop coming to you for help and prefer others. It has lasting negative impacts especially to your friends, and worst, condemn you as liars. It may come to a point that nobody believes when you tell the truth. Most friends describe these people as pious persons who went to Sunday Mass, performed a novena every day and regularly visited the church every morning. But beware! Credibility sinks as deep as the bottomless pit!

On the other hand, good reputation, and strong leadership credibility, truly help us increase our opportunities and chances for success. We must commit to practice what we preach; be honest and fair in dealing with others and can be trusted in discharging our responsibilities. Further, we do fulfill what we have promised and adhered to moral values and principles more than friendship can offer.

Politicians credibility counts a lot!

Why the Philippines is Poor

                              By Vic Odarve

Graft and corruptions, tax evasions, and media controls are the looting machines that keep the Philippines a poor country. According to the Office of the Ombudsman, the Philippines is losing around P700 billion, or around 20 percent of the country’s total budget appropriation, yearly, due to corruption. On tax evasion, the government has pinpointed out that the primary source of corruptions is the BIR examiners in connivance with government officials and politicians and bigwigs in our society. Lastly, oligarchs use its media power to support for their own ends of business interest to generate more substantial profits. These practices keep our country poor.

Plowing the rice fields

Plowing the field since time immemorial

The Deputy Ombudsman Office said the Philippines ranked the 6th most corrupt among Asia Pacific countries. That is why as he steps in Malacañang Office, the President had accelerated his predecessor’s campaign against graft and corruptions. To date, several officials have been dismissed for alleged corruption or misconduct and going extravagant trips. Among them include Peter Laviña, former National Irrigation Administration chief, Ismael Sueno, former interior secretary and Dionisio Santiago, former Dangerous Drugs Board Chairman. Hence, it is not surprising that to date, nearly two dozen officials have been fired for alleged corruption. The Bureau of Customs heads the list among the corrupt government officials. Corruption remains a significant barrier why we are left behind from our Asian neighbors in economy and progress.

Corruption is alarming

On tax evasion, the government has ongoing tax administration reforms and review of the declared asset and income in the submitted Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth (SALN) of all national officials. In the previous administration, they impeached former Chief Justice Corona while the current one is the case of Chief Justice Sereno. Tax evasion was also filed with Rappler and Dunkin’ Donuts of the Prietos, who own the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The BIR had also filed before the DOJ three tax evasion cases against homegrown cigarette manufacturer Mighty Corp. and its chief executives for a total of P37.9 billion in unpaid excise taxes due to the alleged use of fake tax stamps. Lucio Tan, one of the richest Filipinos, owes the government at least P30 billion in payable taxes. And still, there are some other oligarchs in the country doing the same under the government periscope.

Shaping the future generation

Media literate constitutes the essence of sustaining a democratic society. But if controlled by few oligarchs with extensive businesses around the country, news broadcasts are riddled with potentially misleading content, more often favored the anti-government and keep silent on oligarch’s shadowy business contracts. That is why anomalous contracts in water, electricity, and several establishments between the government and the few elites are not exposed. It requires the president to expose an anomalous contract of theses untouchables. Lately, the giant network ABS CBN was closed its operation by the government due to its failure to renew its franchise. It had also violated its franchise rules and is “killing” the cable industry because of its other paid products, particularly the TV plus digital box. Because of the closure, some senators, and congressmen with businesses from the network came to a rescue. Even the leftist groups are rallying the giant network to put back the channel operation. The controlled media broadcasting operation enable these businessmen slowly enrich themselves and establishing their businesses, contracts at their advantage. This makes these businessmen richer every day while the country is becoming poorer.

Education builds ones personality

The Philippines remain a sick man in Asia due to graft and corruption, tax evasion, and battered economy. Since Duterte is not beholden to any of the political, social, or economic elites, he can focus his energy to challenge after these untouchables without fear. Although he has a big foul mouth, Duterte has the will to implement the law for the good of the country. People are fed up with sweet-talking politicians for several decades. But one thing of caution to the president: he must constantly consult and listen to his advisers on critical matters.

Fighting these looting machines is a challenging job. But Duterte enjoys the support from most of the Filipinos. Sometimes the scenarios’ give us pain, but it must be done for the betterment of the next generations.

Outright Lying at the Airport Works

Outright lying at the airport works!

Vicodar observed that religious personalities like evangelists, ministers, priests, nuns, sisters, and brothers of Christian congregations were less likely interrogated during inspections at the airport.

After the snakelike cordoned queuing in the immigration checkpoint at the international airport, Vicodar was told to replace his yellow fever card with a prescribed one in a nearby clinic. So, he did! With only a few people in the office, he immediately handed his card to one of the officers.” Good day Sir, May I change this card with the prescribed one?” The officer nodded and said,” Your passport, visa, and valid ID please!” Vicodar complied. After a few minutes, the officer asked” You are a foreigner, what are you doing here in Africa?” “Am a missionary here working with Faith Ministry.”, Vicodar said with a smile. “So, you are a priest”, the officer said. Thinking for a while, he said, “Ah… ah… yes! Sir”. The officer looked pleased and seemed very courteous; fixed his signature and handed back the documents. Then Vicodar said,” Thank you very much, God bless you all”. Then the officer and his fellow workers said in chorus” Thank you, Father, Amen”.

Fully exhausted from a long travel the next leg of the trip finally brought him to the domestic airport. This time, he was met by a Rev. Sister. Queuing for almost an hour in a security screening, baggage inspection, and weighing stations, Vicodar was again called up by one of the officers to finally confirm his baggage before transporting to a waiting cart nearby.” Come here, show me your baggage and let me inspect what is inside!” one of the officers said. Sensing that the baggage would be opened again for inspection, he pointed to Reverend Sister as the owner. The sister was a few meters away; in religious attire! “Okay”, the officer said. Again, a little deception works!

While lying can leave us indelible torture in our conscience, but the same goes for being too honest and open. Why? Telling the truth may entail too much delay in interrogation or may end with solicitation. Remember the airport greeting “Do you have something for me?”

Vicodar is not a priest. He owns the baggage. He is a mere employee in one of the great schools in Africa. Outright lying works! A little deception is needed! It works at the airport.

Keep the Secrets to Yourself

By Vic Odarve

Just keep the secrets to yourself. It feels you safe, free from embarrassment and stays out of trouble. Sharing the secrets to somebody may put your safety in jeopardy, and if not properly exercise with caution may result in miserable endings. Further, once the secrets are exposed, the feeling of embarrassment to friends and relatives during any social activities is likely the consequences. Worst, if the secrets are shared to some people that could not be trusted, it will spread exponentially like virus, and it sparks trouble and ended in an unhappy ending and possible retaliation. Whether the secrets are yours or shared with your friends, you always feel better and safer by not sharing it to anyone. It is better to conceal the secrets to yourself.

keep-mouth-shut-blog

Keep your mouth shut

Keep the secrets to yourself for your personal safety. There are times in our life that secrecy seems the only path of least resistance of our existence. Exposing the secrets may lead to a potential conflict and take a terrible toll in our life. For instance, in order to avoid trouble and for her own safety, a grandmother revealed on her deathbed of a child she had out of wedlock. The same was true to an actress with an illicit love affair with the husband of her best friend was known only in her dying days. It would be difficult for a mother to reveal that one of her siblings that clearly did not look like the rest of her family that he is not part of the biological family. After her husband had died, she did not share with others about this child even to her best friends. In most cases, forging school results, engaging in witchcraft ceremonies and sex related activities are secrets usually held for a lifetime.

Gossips and rumors-exposing the secrets

Keeping the secrets to yourself is one way to avoid embarrassment. Our world is very much bigger than we think. We do not know that some of our best friend may spread the dark secret to somebody with malicious intent and may damage our reputation. That was the case of a former Justice Secretary who shared her secrets to her lover on how to raise millions of pesos for her campaign to get a senatorial seat. At the end, it was her lover who is also her security aide and alleged bagman, came as witness during a court hearing. Her world turned upside down, and she landed to a prison cell. Apart from embarrassment, exposed secrets are annoying and frustrating. Oftentimes, it is exaggerated and misinterpreted such that it always negatively portrays the person’s personality and character. Sometimes, you realized that some of your friends in a company was a big mouth that they cannot keep things to themselves. In order to prevent embarrassment, remain the secrets to yourself.

20170511_103023

By keeping the secrets to yourself, you are averting troubles. It is our human nature that we commit mistakes. It is a part of our life. Because her husband/partner could no longer give her enjoyment of several years due to health problems, she sometimes goes out for massage and finds somebody to comfort her problems. My friend, a Math professor confided to me that his biggest secret is that he is a convicted felon, had been arrested once for a sexual offends and twice against driving under the influence of alcohol. Because of these, he spent 6 months behind bars as sentence. He is a member to a professional organization that would boot him immediately if anyone would expose his conviction, and he still fears that someone may discover what he is hiding. Secrets involving sexless marriage, extramarital affairs, sex adventure, and sexuality often hide a sense of shame and when revealed it can be transformed as rumors. It is shocking and upsetting if one fine day you discover out your friend is spreading your shameful secret that started as rumors. It really hurts and breaks relationships once it began to escalate. So, in order to prevent these troubles, keep the secrets to yourself.

Life is like a sunset at its best…tranquility of life when secret is not exposed

No matter how careful and cautious you are, if the secrets are exposed it has devastating impacts on any relationships. Exposing the secrets can interfere with any relationship and lurking your life into trouble. As negative emotion begins to flow, it may result to an ugly ending. Your exposed secrets may destroy you, family, friends, and relationship. It has a devastating impact on marriages that ended in divorces, separation and broken homes. In our world today where staying out of any formed into trouble is very much advisable, one sure way of effectively achieving is by keeping the secrets to ourselves.

Keeping some of your life secrets does better than harm. If sharing remains the latter option, think it twice before you do it with selective people. Jesus, on his transfiguration with Elijah and Moses, commanded Peter and James and his brother John not to inform anyone what they had just seen up high in the mountain. The Bible narrated the event as follows.

5 Peter was still speaking when a bright cloud covered them in its shadow, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, my Chosen One. Listen to him.” 6 On hearing the voice, the disciples fell to the ground, full of fear. 7 But Jesus came, touched them and said, “Stand up, do not be afraid.” 8 When they raised their eyes, they no longer saw anyone except Jesus. 9 And as they came down the mountain, Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone what they had just seen, until the Son of Man be raised from the dead. Matthew 17: 1-9

There are secrets that must always be kept secret. This is so because telling the world about them — however much you share and care — nothing but will not bear you any good. Secrets are powerful but by keeping the secrets to yourself it feels you safe, free from embarrassment, and stay out of trouble.

Where do Seniors Spend Their Remaining Years?

                        By Vic Odarve

Where to spend the remaining years to among the senior citizens becomes a nagging question. Whether living independently or not, they want to live within their comfort zone to the rest of their life. The most familiar reasons are living alongside with their friends and family at their hometowns, staying in a community where there is a social interaction, and residing in a place where they can go freely at any times. As we perceive it, these remains the wishes that the most seniors want to spend in their twilight years.

20180514_060234

At hometown is the best option

As their children enjoy their own family and work life becomes a distant past, residing in their hometown is the ideal one. The reasons are understandable…their married children, childhood friends and relatives are predominantly living there. Their hometown is always associated with many family traditions and an old friend’s fond memories. The frequent visits from their children, grandchildren, and other relatives or friends promote them an instant happiness. Seeing old friends back home, too, keeps their forgotten memories alive, and the familiarity of the places where they have spent their childhood back in time also keeps the world alive. If mobility and health are becoming concerns, family members, friends, and relatives are always there to assist. So, living near to social circles of friends around is a familiar wish for the seniors.

Family circles

Living in a community where seniors can interact with can also bring pleasure. Many seniors are simply fortunate to visit their lifelong friends during weekends for the story telling …stories back on their heydays while they are young and carefree. It generates an excitement to meet with childhood friends after a long time and feeling that nothing has changed. And the thing is, once you come face to face with them, you will realize that you are also old. Then you will learn that some of your best friends are gone, and some are still living. Some are still playing basketball and do videoke over a bottle of beer. Others are still singing and joining the church and community choirs. Here they can have fun, boost mood, and stay engaged in the world of joys without needing to move around too much. These represent the social interaction that some seniors wish to have in their remaining years.

20180514_143901

Going outdoor; Mayana Century-old Narra tree

Retirement is also about enjoying the extra time that you right now maintain within the parameters of your health and energy. That is why, many seniors also desire that they can go freely at any time they wish. Some engaged in gardening of flowers and vegetables. Some want to spend time outdoors. Getting outside to spend a little time in nature is relaxing and a great mood booster. Seniors with limited mobility can merely get to the porch or sit next to a big window, obtaining some fresh air or appreciating the scenery. It is already a great routine activity. Research has found creative activities can help people that are combating chronic illness will decrease their negative emotions and increase optimistic ones, thus, reducing stress and anxiety, and improve medical outcomes. Still others may want to enjoy a property on which they devoted years investing time and money. They can now have time to develop and produce whatever they desire to achieve in fulfillment of their ambition to life.

Devoting the remaining years abroad is another option for some reason or another. But it is like an exile. The Israeli, living in Babylon as exile for several years, always lamented that it is difficult to sing their Lord’s song in a foreign land. (By the rivers of Babylon).

friends reformat

What friends are for….

That is, it feels like that there is no place like home. At hometown, what we need is there…our loved ones, social circles, friends, and relatives. They are all we need to enjoy and get us through this life. They remain the only things from this world that we could hope to see in the next. It is repeatedly a wish for the seniors to always go back to the people that were there in the beginning of their lives.

Life is so short, so there is no reason why we should not live it to the fullest expression of ourselves. Our decision where to spend our last remaining years will always with us. The choice is ours and irrevocable, when the dust of all our cities incarnadines the sunsets of the world.

Covid-19:A Mind-Boggling Outbreak

                By Vic Odarve

There are so many mind-boggling things about covid-19… how the outbreak started, why it had not been stopped earlier, and why the virus was able to spread from China to the rest of the world like a wildfire.

20200414_112702

corona virus hair style

The overwhelming majority — said that the virus likely came about naturally. That is, it originates in animals, most likely bats. Several unverified reports, however, pointed that the covid-19 may have emerged from a laboratory in Wuhan rather than in a market in the city. Because China is not an open society, it lacks transparency over the outbreak; hence, information is a mite too late for the western world to react. As such, the virus grows exponentially uncontrolled, and its transmission of an infected individual rose to millions across the globe.

A virus could be a laboratory creation. Researchers conducting experiments may have overlooked some of the safety protocols that may result from accidental contamination/infection to some of the laboratory personnel. Breakage of laboratory apparatus, lapses during the conduct of experiments, and improper wastage disposals are among the common causes of the infection. The genetically modified organisms have generated concern because of their potential biological risk – not only for people, but also for the environment due to their unpredictable behavior. In addition, concern for Biosafety is associated with the emergence of new diseases or re-emergence of diseases that were already under control. Once laboratory workers or some prominent personalities/dignitaries visited the place and got an infection before a declared quarantine, chances are they become a carrier of the virus to their places where they belong.

davao

Davao city on lock down

Information about the outbreak of the pandemic is a mite too late to the outside world. Local officials said that early reporting in Wuhan had been delayed and inaccurate. As known to the western democracies that most often in China, news reports are censored and controlled by the government. That is, there appears that there is misinformation around the virus transmission/contamination. There was indeed a need of a transparent system for tracking health events.

As the virus infection scattered around the world, most governments fumbled their covid-19 response and do not know how to tackle and control the exponential growth. Shortage of proper materials and paraphernalia on how to contain the infection, coupled with an over-burdened healthcare system, most hospitals crumbled like the house of cards. In her dying days, a woman with covid-19 repeatedly talked to her sister about her pain. A nursing home patient spent her final days talking to her parents about the pain she was experiencing as she battled covid-19. To date, medicine is still in research stage. An awful tragedy!

corona

Common scenario in public places

Covid-19 has been dubbed a rich person’s disease since the virus is largely introduced to the afflicted region by affluent parts of society that had been traveling abroad. An overwhelming majority of the people said that the virus likely came about naturally. That is, it is originated in animals, most likely bats. But for others, the virus was released accidentally from the laboratory or was likely created in a lab. Records showed that US embassy in Beijing had raised concerns about safety at two laboratories in Wuhan in recent years. Whether its origin is from the laboratory or bats, it is debatable.

But on how the outbreak started, why it had not been stopped earlier, and why the virus was able to spread around the world…it is mind boggling.

Close to Nature,Please!

                         By Vic Odarve

Mother Nature has, and always be, offers her inexpensive entertainment, therapeutic treatment, and spiritual enhancement. The marching clouds above your head, birds doing an orchestra in the bough of the trees, and watching the pebbles rolling in the beaches are something worth remembering. Mind-stressors, stricken life situations, and life suffering illnesses appears to disintegrate by spending your time at the outdoors. Environmental psychologists claimed that there is a spiritual enhancement component added to the human-nature relationship. Stay close to nature please!

Going outdoors is like seeing a movie. From the forest land and mountains, an orchestra of birds doing choir. In the sky, canopy of clouds is drifting above our heads doing a military drill. At night, stars are twinkling in unison like an entertainment in the heavens. Back to our sandy beaches and rivers, beautiful sights will stick in your mind reminding us that we are a part of this beautiful world. Nature has, and forever be, gives us an inexpensive entertainment… free of charge to everybody!

Doing an escapade during weekends to the nearby mountains, dense forest, and pristine rivers cures our aching hearts… one way of getting away some of our daily aches and pains. By going to these places, you can feel the earth rotating around its axis. Momentarily, we feel like walking through mist and clouds along the mountain ranges, meet all the fairies and magical creatures, and hear the bird’s sweet songs doing orchestra along the canopies. It is a way of getting rid from traffic woes and healing the wounds from our aching heart. It is a therapeutic massage that mother nature heals softly our mind and body.

cvc 1

Spending time at the sandy beaches

The more we are close with the mother nature, the more we feel that we are not alone. We feel that there is somebody that created everything.  At nighttime, it is a joy to see the canopy of stars twinkling in all the heavens; stretching like an enormous spider’s web scattered in all directions across the vastness of the cosmic ocean. We could feel the presence of our Creator; we owe our lives to these stars. By thus doing, we feel the joy of being close to Him and the works of thy hands. An enhancement on our spiritual feeling.

Being close to mother nature gives us more meaning in our life. It has positive effect on our mental well -being. It fosters the innermost feelings of happiness and peace. It reduces stresses and fights depressions. For instance, dine with your family in a floating restaurant while seeing the beautiful panorama underlining the river upstream open our eyes to the outside world. For a moment, we feel the tranquility of our lives from the toxic city life. Hence, nature improves physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Nature heals!

As we see it, being close to Nature’s gives us pleasure, therapeutic treatment free of charge, and spiritual enhancement. It is all given to us unconditionally… to the poor, the rich, and the mighty!

Too Much Pride and Regrets

By Vic Odarve

Pride can be a pleasant emotion and a positive personality trait, but if it is too much can be self – destructive and may end to regrets. Too much pride seems deplorable those even parents seem hopeless to mend the battered future of their children. It ruined the relationship nurtured for years to an undying world of revenge. It gives a feeling of restlessness and develops a feeling of hatred for your life and ends only when you will be on to the other side of the world. But at the end, when your time comes, you will regret everything.

Definitely, too much pride is deplorable. An outstanding performing student has a very impressive record of the first semester in my Math courses but found later he stops schooling because his parents could not give him a new computer set as they had to promise. Because of his shame on his classmates on the coming semester without computer, he decided to stop schooling. No matter how the parents explained that they could no longer afford because his father was just laid off from the work, the son would not listen. The mother tried to apologize but no matter what she said, her son would not forgive her. It comes to a point that the son would not speak to the parent anymore. His world collapses as he would be put to shame from his classmates on the coming school opening. Too much pride is unforgivable.

Bible tells us the negative sides of too much pride

Sometimes pride ruins our friendship. A week before his birthday, my friend invited me for a dinner on the celebration. I was preoccupied with my work and completely forgotten the invitation. It was only late in the evening that I texted and asked him an apology for not attending the occasion. Since then, he refused to respond any call or text as if he cannot accept my explanation. No matter how I apologize, he did not listen. His pride appears to hold him back to accept apology. Though painful to loss a friend but because of pride, it ruins our own friendship.

In addition, too much pride can develop a feeling of hatred. Just because we did not share our wifi/internet connection, our neighbor refused to talk to our families anymore. We tried explaining to her many times, but to no avail. Since that time, our neighbor would no longer visit our house and join with our usual family gathering where they used to be during the earlier years. A feeling of hatred!

Pride can be a positive personality trait but also can be a negative. It motivates one’s selfish needs because of pride. Sometimes the pain lingering in our heart of not forgiving will end when life also ended. Others felt that by accepting forgiveness would destroy their egos and as such is disparaging to their very person. Even a son or a daughter may not forgive their parents because of pride. Parents, friends, and neighbors are the joys of our life. Life is too short and should not end in regrets.

Too much pride has an awful drawback…losing your parents, love ones, and friends and once you saw them no more…you will remember your good times with them and regret everything!

What I Left Behind To My Students

                By Vic Odarve

As would be the last classroom lecture before the class ends for the second semester, I reminded them to take a promissory note from the College Dean should there will be a problem on a permit to take the final exam. And further, by doing so since they are graduating, special exams can be avoided which may bring complication in their coming graduation.

Engineering Students-Philippines

When I heard these, my world crumbled like a black curtain fell, destroying the timetable already laid up for smooth planning on their graduation and the submission of grades. This means another time for exam preparation, correction, as well as grades computation, to meet the deadline on all requirements for graduating students. It is additional work and another life stressors!

blog-study-math

My Engineering Students-African University

I pondered for a moment. I believed that they were fighting a battle common for the graduating students…financial. The problem seemed to flash back and forth in my mind recalling the memories of my college days. I had been experiencing such a situation before that nearly failed me to march during the graduation day. And perhaps, these two students had the same problem. But am not certain!

The helplessness and uncertainty of the situation whether these two students could graduate or not keep on pressing in my mind. I already had deep attachments with these students for having with them since in their freshmen years. And they were my best performers in the classroom.

    Classroom lecture

And upon my advice, with the presence of their parents, we met the College Dean and together made a promissory note with the Registrar. Finally, it worked!

Sometimes life is a pain but there are situations that taught us the determination to move forward when facing adversity. The students tried to work hard that seemed solutions were out of sight.

For us, it was a chance to show a view of humanity that a little help meant a great thing for those in need. Sometimes we have to understand the unique challenges each of us faces so that we could treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, and care.

Today when I see students marching on their graduation day, I always remember these two students.

Elect the Best Candidates: The Choice is Ours

Since a number of candidates with various intentions wants to hold a public office in a democratic society, elections have been the usual mechanism by which a population chooses representatives. Elections give people an opportunity to have their say, invoke the symbols of nationalism or patriotism, and more, elections break the monotony of our daily life with government officials running our economy with a downward trend which the country suffers. As always is, the choice to elect public officials to hold a public office is yours and is irrevocable.

Participating in the election process really invokes the symbols of nationalism or patriotism. It gives us satisfaction in our need to feel a sense of belonging to our country…the place of our birth. Hence, the events during election time that include rallies, banners, posters, and television coverage, suggest the importance of our participation. Sharing a post like the one shown below educates fellow voters. The Philippines is an electoral democracy, but sometimes corruption and a lack of transparency continue to undermine democratic development. Elections have historically been marred by fraud, intimidation, and political violence. Vote-buying and vote-selling obstruct the democratic process, yet they remain pervasive in some parts of our country. Taking part to monitor a clean and honest election is one of our nationalistic roles.

This is the time to give people an opportunity to have their say. The graph shown above showed Duterte garnered +66 satisfactory rating for the first quarter of 2019 as compared with the previous presidents. His anti-corruption and drugs campaign works. For the old politicians, we can confirm if our last vote is worth what we are looking for public servants. Whatever other reasons voters may have in their minds, participation in the upcoming election serves to reinforce our self-esteem and self-respect. For the neophytes in politics, voters have their time to dig deeper if the candidates are best applicants in the government position. He could not be the perfect candidate—but maybe the best among them. At least, the voters can choose better candidates for the public servants.

By arousing emotions and working toward a collective objective on improving our country by electing good performing government officials, it gives us a chance to replace below par performers in our governance platform. By helping our voters through education, we can select candidates that could not be bought and fooled by the big businesses, crooked government officials, and oligarchs. Graft and corruption, tax evaders, and drug lords have been the perennial problems in this country. These are the main culprits why our economy is on a downward trend. One thing is certain …let others also know that they must vote according to their conscience, even if they do accept money.

Choosing the best candidate can be a challenging job and when none of them seem to be a perfect fit for the public position, always vote for people who will best represent and uphold biblical values. Candidates, which are usually groomed and supported by media giants and rich and powerful oligarchs, must be investigated if they have records on graft and corruption. If they are one of them, crush them out in your list.  Do not vote them even if they are endorsed by the President. Do not sell your votes to save our country! Believe in God supernatural touch. The Bible says,

“When we humble ourselves and pray…He will heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14)!

The choice to select candidates is ours and is irrevocable when the dust of all our cities incarnadines the sunsets of the world.

Hard Work Brings Profit

By Vic Odarve

I placed all the examination papers in my table preparing for a week-long marking or checks for the final grade. I know it would be a long way to work it out. As usual, I looked first to my favorite students to check their performances and see to it if they got correct answers on the difficult problems. In engineering courses, problems are usually a part of the exams.

Sometimes a university life is a pain

It is the joy of the teachers that the majority of the students will pass the exam, and of course, checking first among the class best performers serves as the jumpstart of the undertaking to lift up your day.

To my surprise, the script of the best class performers was not in the bundled answer sheets. Just a day before I completed the work, I called the attention of the Department dean if any information about this student on why she failed to take the final exam. To my dismay, the dean informed me that the student failed to secure the required exam permit. She failed to settle her outstanding school fees obligation.

As the grade submission drew nearer, I proceeded to compute the class grade following the established guidelines. I am no longer interested to see her as the top performers of the class. Like in a game of chess, trying to salvage a draw from a difficult position is itself a win. True, as I encoded her overall final period performance without final exams, she still passed with a barely passing grade of 75%. Somewhat a miracle! Her admirable performance during prelim and midterm periods contributed it all. Then, I think to myself, ‘life is sometimes cruel.’

Recently, I took a vacation to my birthplace and attended their annual fiesta celebration. On the land of my ancestors, I visited a piece of land I inherited from my parents. There, I saw beautiful and bearing flower trees. They look like Christmas trees.

A rocky terrain but trees struggle to grow

But I was shocked to see that it grew from the rocky lot where other plants seldom survived. How the roots can obtain water during summer where rain seldom pour down? I pondered for a moment. While walking slowly seeing the beautiful scenery of rice terraces, I remember my student who was struggling in pain over her grades in the mathematics of the last semester. What an irony! This beautiful tree is trying to survive from a rocky ground like my student salvaging a grade of 75%.

Obstacles are part of our journey in life and sometimes destroyed many people because they gave up and turned their focus away from their dreams. When times get rough, life simply falls apart. But for the student and the trees, they have to live and work hard in order to survive.

Despite all these trials, life marched on and turned out positive.

The Bible puts it, “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23

So, be it!

Sometimes Life is Pain and Sacrifice

By Vic Odarve

She was one of my best math performers last year. That’s why after every school exams and quizzes, I always checked her papers first over the others. It gives me the thrill to scan over her solutions; watches the steps involved, and the way she presented her mathematical manipulations until arriving her final answer.  Except for a few cases, she always got a perfect score. So I thought that I am one of the lucky professors to have this student under my course. Her performance becomes a barometer on how effective my teaching strategy is!

A Math Professor

That’s it. I am comfortable on her way she acted as a student taking up an engineering course…a course where some stupid ones failed to graduate because of math. In one of my visit to the university library to read some local newspaper, she requested me to have some explanation on the math solutions previously discussed in the classroom. “Okay, what part of the topic?” I told her. She opened her notes and showed the steps where she got the problems. After some explanation and discussion, she was contented. Feeling satisfied, she said, “Thank you, Sir, I understand already”, she said. Then I said,” What was the result of your last quiz?” “I got 90 % score, Sir”, she smiled. “Good, and on next quiz, you must get a perfect score”, I replied. Then she slowly walked and slipped away out of my sight. I paid little attention. She got a good score. So nothing to worry!  She may just serious enough and want to do more on her study every day.

Then, the next quiz came. Only 2 out of 54 students in a class got a perfect score. And she was one of them!

18446966_1450139381711462_1774365570315310354_n

After pain and sacrifices, life is beautiful

It was then that I gave her an attention. I noticed that during the class session, she sat at the end of the last row of the seats in a packed and overcrowded room. She listened intently and focused on my discussion. No friend, no talking even on her seatmates as if she knew none of her classmates! “She must be too shy”, I guessed.

The semester math course was about to finish. I gave a quiz before the final exam. “This would be the last quiz”, I told the students. Then what was the result? She got perfect score again! She had done it! “She is a good performing student”, I told myself.

The next meeting I returned the quiz papers/scripts. She was absent. For almost two weeks, I could no longer see her. Then I inquired her classmates what happened to this girl. To my surprise, none of her classmates knew her. She vanished and I received no word from her and her whereabouts! I was completely pushed to the wall blank!

IMG-20141110-00899

An African setting. My class in Math usually consists of 300-400 students.

After two weeks my phone rang. The girl informed me that she does a part-time job in an instrumentation company to support her schooling financially and thus, she failed to attend the class. I was dumbfounded and could not believe it. Lately, I also found out another student who often absent during my class lectures is also doing a part-time job in a food chain restaurant.

Sometimes we feel that life is a pain but for these two students who did sacrifices mark that they are really great. Students engaging in this task will reap in joy and bountifully. The Bible puts it,

Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy. He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him” – Psalms 126:5-6 (NKJV).

So be it! Sometimes we feel life is a pain but in the end shall reap in joy.

Fighting the Philippine’s Looting Machines

By  Vic Odarve

Graft and corruptions, tax evasions, and smuggling activities are the looting machines that keep the Philippines a poor country.  To combat this looting machines, the President had accelerated his predecessor’s campaign against graft and corruptions, tax cheaters, and smugglers. To date, several officials have been fired for alleged corruption or

Graft and corruption

misconduct and going extravagant trips. On tax evasion, the government has ongoing tax administration reforms and review of the declared asset and income in the submitted Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth (SALN) of all public officials. Lately, the President also issued a directive to publicly destroy illegally shipped contrabands in the country’s economic zones aimed at deterring smuggling. Thus, a war of nerve emerges… Duterte vs The Looting Machines.

According to a report by Global Financial Integrity, the Philippines lost aboutP19.34 trillion between 1960 and 2011 on graft and corruption and keep on increasing. Big time corrupt officials are from the government offices, bigwigs in our society, and business magnates and oligarchs. Hence, it is not surprising that to date, nearly two dozen officials have been fired for alleged corruption and going on extravagant trips since Duterte came to power two years ago.  The   Bureau of Customs tops the list among the corrupt government officials. Duterte said, “If you go to the national government just to look for an opportunity for money, go look for another job. I will really fire you,” Duterte told employees of the Department of Agrarian Reform on June 20. The Pork barrel scam led by Napoles where billions of pesos were stolen from the Filipino people must be a thing of the past. Corruption remains a significant barrier why we are left behind from our Asian neighbors in economy and progress.

Illegal shipment

On tax evasion, the government has found out that the primary source of corruptions is the BIR examiners in connivance with government officials and politicians and bigwigs in our society. Therefore, the government with all of its power brought to the court all corrupt BIR examiners and government officials and slapped with tax evasion cases. In the previous administration, they impeached former Chief Justice Corona while the current one is the case of Chief Justice Sereno. Tax evasion was also dealing with Rappler and Dunkin’ Donuts of the Prietos, who own the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Erring examiners were put under investigation after being asked to resign if they will not stop corrupt practices. The BIR had also filed before the DOJ three tax evasion cases against homegrown cigarette manufacturer Mighty Corp. and its top executives for a total of P37.9 billion in unpaid excise taxes due to the alleged use of fake tax stamps. Lucio Tan, one of the richest Filipinos, owes the government at least P30 billion in unpaid taxes. And still, there are some other oligarchs in the country doing the same under the government periscope.

The coming of the new generation

Another headache is the smuggling of goods from foreign countries that include basic necessities such as rice, onions, etc. and cars. Lately, the government intercepted expensive cars and motorbikes together with some of the 800 contraband vehicles imported in Cagayan port. Thus, as directed by the President, bulldozers were used to destroy a total of 68 contraband luxury vehicles valued at P277.9 million and 8 luxury motorbikes worth P19.5 million. Among the luxury cars destroyed were Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche Carrera and Mercedez Benz SLK 280.  Since car smugglers still rake in profits from the selling of seized cars, destroying the smuggled luxury vehicles will give them no opportunity to secure them legally through the Bureau of Customs.

The Philippines is a sick man in Asia due to graft and corruption, tax evasion, and smuggling. Since Duterte is not beholden to any of the political, social or economic elites, he can focus his energy to run after these untouchables without fear. Although he has a big foul mouth, Duterte has the will to implement the law for the good of the country. People are fed up with sweet talking politicians for several decades. But one thing of caution to the president: he must always consult and listen to his advisers on critical matters like the case of mayor Espinosa and now on Senator Trillanes before making a public announcement.

Fighting these looting machines is a difficult job. But Duterte has the support from the majority of the Filipinos. Sometimes the scenarios’ give us pain but it must be done for the betterment of the next generations.

Why Ordinary Filipinos Love President Duterte?

By Vic Odarve

For almost three decades, the Philippines is struggling in pain over the crippling culture of corruption, illegal drug trades, and crimes that bankrupted an already poor country which appears impossible to remedy. They are very much tired of the sweet talking politicians who often promise heavens and earth for an exchange of government elected positions yet failed to perform. To many ordinary Filipinos, they are looking for a man who can give hope to leap the country to a better tomorrow. Duterte, whose unorthodox behaviour and outrageous statements are often highlighted in media forum, appeared to be their only hope to challenge and can deliver result!

Thousands of OFW at the Dubai Airport

It is common knowledge that the country is mired by graft and corruption, illegal drug trades, and street criminals. There are rampant graft and corruptions in almost all government offices. Diversion of budgets, awarding of contracts, and various government transactions from ordinary people such as getting a medical card, passport, drivers licence, etc., take several weeks are among the few.  For several decades, the same political clans have dominated Filipino politics and businesses; worst, some of these oligarchs did not pay proper taxes amounting to significant billions of pesos. Illegal drugs are spiralling and out of control. The success of De Lima in politics and accumulation of wealth of the Espinosas in the province of Leyte were associated with the illegal drugs network.  The mayor of Ozamis city, despite the history of crime, had gained trust and admiration by the residents for sharing the loot from illegal drugs. For several decades, the elected presidents are always after popularity. They want to be seen in a good light and they don’t want to affect the relationships with the oligarchs who control the country’s economy.

    Poor neighborhood in Metro Manila

Unlike any sweet talking politicians, Duterte promises a change is definitely coming during his term. Ordinary Filipinos feel that Duterte will stand his ground when oligarchs try to influence him. That is, after a few months at Malacanang office and because of his political will, the government earned around P 6B from Lucio Tan from tax evasion, 1.7B w/o Tax from Mile Long Property, and 25B from Mighty Cigarettes.  Senator De Lima, once the most sought-after lawyers and powerful government officials, is now imprisoned for alleged involvement in illegal drugs. Several cabinet secretaries and government officers’ were fired out after found enriching themselves while holding a position. Such were the case of Peter Lavina, former National Irrigation Administration chief, Ismael Sueno, former interior secretary, and the several others. Nowadays, medical card, passport, business permits, etc., that takes several weeks before can be available within three days or less.  Enforcement agencies are more active in monitoring and in implementing rules; hence, drug lords and users are afraid of resulting to a safer environment.

Demonstrations and rallies are the same old songs as in past regimes

To many ordinary Filipinos, they are looking for a man who can give hope to leap the country to a better tomorrow. They feel that Duterte will not be swayed by the oligarchs for what is best for the Filipinos. His sincerity to fight graft and corruption rises investor confidence. People think they are now safer due to illegal drugs. Street crimes related to drugs are now reduced. Despite all the shortcomings of his unorthodox behaviour, ordinary Filipinos welcomed the development as shown by his high-performance rating. Although it provokes outrage in some quarters, most ordinary Filipinos are unfazed but love Duterte!

For several decades the past presidents have tried almost all possible strategies to improve our country but failed. Filipinos feel they have been voting for liars and cheaters and for political dynasties for too long. Because of the poor job opportunity at home, most able bodied Filipinos have to work abroad as OFW. The outrage in the American and European media over the extrajudicial killings or Duterte’s more inflammatory statements on the Catholic church about God still keep the Filipinos unfazed on their faith in his leadership. They believed that the time for a change has come. The Bible puts it;

1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,

3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,

4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,

6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,

7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,

8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 NIV

That is why the ordinary Filipinos love Duterte for the time to change has come.

Duterte’s Iron-fisted Rule

             By Vic Odarve

Simply, there are those who criticized and appreciated this brand of leadership. Supporters consider this style as strong and decisive leadership…an effective response to rising number of street crimes, illegal drug trade, and rampant corruptions. While on the opposite flank, critics claimed that the authoritarian rule is a recipe to a dictatorship form of governance. But whether we like it or not, historian reminds us that the iron-fisted rule has its positive as well as negative impact. So, who would like the iron-fisted rule by Duterte?

Duterte as one of the world’s strongman

Supporters of the president consider the Philippines as a sick man in Asia. This country needs to be overhauled. Graft and corruptions blanketed any government transactions, bureaucracy in most government posts, and monopoly in some of our businesses are rampant in almost all sectors of our society. Worst, politicians and some government officials are involved in drug trade. The Philippines is becoming a trans-shipment point for the global illegal drug trade, where a high number of approximately 1.8 million are drug users.  Majority of the people live in poverty coupled with a poor peace and order situation. Hence, they consider Duterte’s fisted rule style as an effective response.

People who also supported this governance are really fed up with the sweet talking politicians. They also think that the previous presidents have turned a blind eye to these problems. In a country where politicians attain a position of authority after the election, they tend to be blinded by power and intoxicated by the perks and privileges attached to the position. Typical examples are the recent issue of the diversion of P10.6 billion fund for PhilHealth intended for the benefits of senior citizens for CY 2015 to the DOH. To most senior citizens, it is a heinous act three times cruel than the Dengvaxia fiasco. It is an act that is utterly heartless and insensitive to the condition of our senior citizens. Lately, Duterte replaces PhilHealth chief mired in travel and leadership issues.  COA flagged Dela Serna for spending P627, 000 for travels and hotels in 2017 despite Phil health’s loss of P8.92 billion. In addition, there were several government heads that were fired and replaced due to ineffective in office. Hence, these citizens favor the iron-fisted rule.

              Leading oppositions

On the other hand, critics claimed that this type of leadership is killing democracy. It is a dictator in the making. The war on illegal drugs which they described as brutal has claimed lives of thousands, mostly urban-poor dwellers. The suspects were killed rather than jailed, sometimes with very little supporting evidence of their involvement in the drug trade…alleged crimes against humanity according to ICC. Allegations of planted evidence are rife so it is not surprising that there is growing concern that the war on drugs may be used as a political tool. That is what happened to Ozamis city mayor Parojinog and Leyte’s Espinosa. Then there were tax evasion cases; the Mighty cigarettes, Lucio Tan, and other oligarchs who run big businesses. Human rights, leftists, and some religious groups described Duterte as a dictator. Even the leaders of the Catholic Church joined the condemnation. They sponsor rallies decrying the death of democracy.

With all these condemnations and rhetoric from the various critics and well supported by the opposition, one thing is clear… the president is gaining support from the people. “Except in September 2017, Pres. Duterte’s net trust rating has been excellent since he became President,” SWS said. The First Quarter 2018 Social Weather Survey, conducted from March 23-27, 2018, found 70% of adult Filipinos satisfied, 17% undecided, and 14% dissatisfied.

A picture of unbecoming a statesman

But when it comes to his behavior, people come to terms and agreement that the president lacks refinement in his attire and his manners. His English is colorful and far from cultured. He talks without carefully considering the consequences. He tends to over-talk and has a big mouth. In his visit to South Korea, he kissed an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) on the lips – a move that drew cheers from the audience but disgust from some netizens… manner which many folks don’t like.

This country has been ruled for a long time by people with their own interests at heart, not to mention pocketing government money into their own pockets. It is the failure of democracy. It is a nation broken by failed democratic policies, mismanagement, and corruption. The people have spoken, and this is their last cards. The majority have shown that iron-fisted rule offers the alternative towards the fulfillment of their aspirations for better life. It is a painful process but must be done.

High School Reunions; a Centrifugal Force of Modern Life

           By   Vic  Odarve

High school reunions are actually a centrifugal force of our modern life. It is a get-together affair that takes on a whole new meaning as we get older, a gathering to reminisce and to relive the fun and feel that we had experienced in high school, and a rare chance to spend some moments with our classmates who were a part of the story of our life. With all indications, high school reunions are like a centrifugal force pulling our classmates to meet together.

Central Visayan College, Jagna, Bohol Batch ’73

Yes, time passes differently as we get older and class reunion takes on a whole new meaning. As the person’s age is over 40 years, we are merely aging, physically and mentally. In our long struggle with time, the get-together affair seems to be a clock to stop the aging process. The excitement and renewed camaraderie that could result from attending the reunion may bring us to back in time. Singing at videoke, story-telling of the bygone days, and going to the beach together may put the time to a standstill. Of course, some of our classmates are older than you would like them to be, and you, too, realize that you are also in your advancing age and appearance.

The gathering allows us to reminisce and relive those thrilling days of our high school days. It is joyful to reunite with the girls and boys with whom you shared the first love and first lusts. Some also retold stories about our teachers who were good, and a handful of teachers we never forget. We never forget the teachers known for having a scary stage persona during classroom lessons. But to the more serious classmates during our high school, they never forget those teachers that pulled them from the depths of abysmal academic achievement into one of the top-performing students.

Picnic time, Batch ’73

The reunions also offer us a rare chance to spend a moment with our classmates after many years of not seeing with each other. It is just a way of revisiting your friends that you have lost track after graduating in high school. Meeting them is more significant in our life simply because they were part of our life story and we were a part of theirs. This is the time to know that some were already gone while others are still living. The usual practice of giving a souvenir such as T-shirt simply a memento that once upon a time we have to share some moments with our high school classmates.

Although in our modern times we have several social media such as Facebook to find our high school classmates’ whereabouts at our fingertips, reunions are more powerful to reconnect, relive our memories, and see our classmates face to face. Nowadays, high school reunions are enjoying a resurgence in popularity.

Reunion is indeed a centrifugal force uniting our classmates. As our life is a journey, spending time in a reunion is a moment to cherish before we will finally reunite with the Holy One sitting on the throne.

Walking in the Footsteps of our Ancestral Homes

By Vic Odarve

A visit to our ancestral homes enables us to trace our roots, remind our past, and provide a thrill to learn how our great-grandparents lived in their heydays. This gives us a unique opportunity to connect our relatives and friends that for many years we have not seen face to face. It also allows us to see what have had happened to some of the places where we once considered as a playground when we were still young and carefree. Further, if this is a land of our birth, we are stepping back in time; the land where your life had started and a visit provide a thrill on how are things going on. A visit to our ancestral homes maybe a journey of our lifetime… before we travel to another universe and see our Maker.

Some are gone while others are still living.

A timely visit is usually done during fiesta celebration and reunion activities where relatives and friends are also around. This gives us a unique opportunity to connect our relatives and friends that for one reason or another, could not make a visit. Our old folks at home welcome us with big smiles, treated us like kings and queens, and huge open arms extending a mile out of their sleeves. Here, plenty of stories were told with a bottle of beer, singing and dancing, and tracing the roots from the grandparents. The best part could be listening to our grandma and grandpa reminisce about the people and events from their past. Here we learned that some of our relatives and friends are already gone while some are still living.

Mayana rice fields

A tour of our hometown also allows us to see what have had happened to some of the places filled with memories during our younger days. For most of us, we consider a visit as an awesome adventure. In our last visit, for example, we came to a path that leads off down a sloping mountain near the river where I had played with my kite before. The trees had grown up a lot in some areas and the once nicely kept rice fields were overgrown and were nearly filled with tall grass after a massive landslide happened a decade ago. It is still clear in my mind how I keep running on this mountain slope before.

As a speaker in one of the international intellectual convention.

Going back to the old trail, I can feel like walking through mists and clouds along the mountain ranges, meet all the fairies and magical creatures, and watch the birds doing orchestra along with the canopies. Thus, we remembered our good old childhood days, where we spent much time playing with our neighbors and assisting our parents in keeping our rice fields. It is sort of feeling that cannot be captured on camera and more than the old pictures hanging on the wall.It is an exhilarating feeling to walk in the footsteps of your ancestors. Sometimes a visit gives me a feeling that had I not studied in a university and became an engineer, I might still be working in the rice fields, instead of doing lectures in the fields of engineering here and abroad.

Our ancestral homes also provide us a glimpse of how things are changed where today’s technology is far more advanced. The old house standing could serve as powerful reminders for the current and future generations about how life once was, back in the days when smartphones, videokes, and other gadgets were all still unheard of.

There really is no place like home. Our ancestral home reminds me the place and events where I come from; the land of my birth, and with all its diversity, the good and the bad, I would like to go there first over anywhere else in the world.

The Challenges That a Senior Citizen are Facing

By  Vic Odarve

Physically and mentally slowing down, health problems, and financial woes describe the inner world of a senior citizen. Grey haired, slightly stooped, and memory lapses indicate physical and mental slowing down. Swelling and pain in joints, medication maintenance, and body aches and pains are the common health problems. Above all, it is the financial problem that gives the senior citizens a gruesome picture that troubled them most. Except on untimely demise, no matter who we are — man, woman, rich or poor — we all grow old and become a senior citizen.

Moment with grandchildren

Physical and mental activities appear to slow down upon entering the portals of being a senior citizen at age 60. Some seniors wanted to do same activities done during their heydays but could not do it anymore. Physical and mental faculties seem to slow down. As we age, doing some normal physical work becomes too difficult. We could see and feel the restrictions of our movements and affects our body as a whole. The bones get weak, eyes don’t see clearly. For instance, playing tennis, basketball, and even dancing seems to lose their excitement because of physical constraints. The world seems to be slowing down.

Swelling and pain in joints, maintaining a medication, and various aches and pains are common of the health problems. Most seniors experience more aches and pains that didn’t use to be there before.  Diseases that include genetic disorders and chronic conditions linked to old age began to appear. There are also diseases like osteoporosis, muscular degeneration, and cataracts that threaten the life of an individual and also affect functioning capabilities. As we grow older, it seems that our brain gets old along with the rest of our body. That is why memory lapses are common among seniors.

Above all, it is the financial problems that give the elderly persons a gruesome picture that troubled them most. The financial status often determines the quality of life the elderly persons have. Those without pensions from the government will be greatly affected when it comes to cash flow needed for medication. Medication eats up way too much of the monthly budget. If your savings is not enough, a major illness can wipe your savings in a flash of time.

Senior citizens enjoy a free cinema movie given by one of the malls in Davao city

Unknown to the many seniors the effect of aging can be slowed down by keeping healthy. Making healthy lifestyle choices, like quitting smoking and losing weight, exercising, and eating a healthful diet will help them disease free. Having a body mass index less than 25 will also lower the risk for heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Enjoy life with your loved ones, spend more time to travel, visit, and attend get together parties/reunions will slow down the aging process.  Changing lifestyle for a better!

Although we heard of seniors as an age of golden years, those living in them often do not see much gold. However, somebody is willing to help you to find that treasure!

“Even to your old age I will be the same, And even to your graying years, I will bear you! I have done it, and I will carry you, And I will bear you and I will deliver you.” Isaiah 46:4

Except on untimely demise, whether we like it or not, we all grow old. We all become seniors and face these challenges.

No Cheating,Please!

                    By Vic Odarve

His head seems to turn at 360 degrees, eyes wandering a mile from his own paper, and scribbled mnemonics/writings on his hands or crib sheets hidden somewhere on the body before entering the examination rooms. This is truly an act of cheating during quizzes and examinations … a headache to all college and university professors! No cheating, please!

An institution with a strong Christian foundation

Like a player on the basketball court, the student turns his head looking for an opening where he could copy for any answers for the exam. When the watcher/proctor attention is on the other students he quickly twisted his head for the opportunity. With a sort of connivance /understanding from his neighbors, he can receive a piece of papers containing exam answers/information. But when caught by the watchers, he had plenty of alibis/allegation for why he does so despite that there can be serious consequences to cheating if caught.

But there are students do not twist their heads; instead, keep their eyes staring at the other sheets from their neighbors. Like a hovering eagle, their eyes are sharp and moving like a drone. Still, other students are looking at the wall or eyes on the ceiling appearing to recall something. Because students have nothing to write they are eyeing their neighbor’s answers. By all indications, these are cheating.

Majority of the students employed the old methods of cheating. Scribbled mnemonics/writings on her hands or crib sheets hidden somewhere on the body before entering the examination rooms are prevalent. These handwritings appear to contain a cryptic message that they themselves could only understand and interpret. Moreover, these writings are somewhat invisible unless you’re very, very close.

Observing how students behave during an examination

Lately, we found that some students are ‘extremely inventive’, with the use of their mobile /smartphones devices, and different types of electronics to help them prosper. These devices have memory cards that can store formulas, charts, and solutions. But, at any rate, these can be easily checked and usually not allowed during the exams.

Almost all schools do not relax and always reminding their students that there can be serious consequences to cheating if caught. Some universities even took an extra measure to ensure that no cheating would occur during the exam. They used a drone to supervise the students during the exam; while others employed various cameras placed inside the exam hall to capture every movement of the students even when they whispered to each other.

Learning a lot from an African university on how their examinations are carried out.

Whether cheating is resorted to because of the pressure to pass the exams and too much to memorize for the coverage to study, it still a venture not pleasing to our Creator. The first chapter of Malachi says God was disappointed in the priests because they were cheating on their job. God goes on to tell the cheating priests, “My name shall be great among the nations. But you dishonor it, saying that my altar is not important, and encouraging people to bring cheap, sick animals to offer to me on it.” Malachi 1:6-14

Whatever the forms of cheating that one may be involved, be it in the classroom or in the government offices, it is not pleasing to the eyes of the Creator.

This practice — along with our country’s all-pervasive culture of corruption — have been largely blamed why this country is poor. Even the Supreme Court justices, the pillars of right and wrong, is not spared from this cheating by not paying proper taxes and not declaring their true Statement of Assets and Liabilities (SAL). Tax reduction scheme employed by giant media  network ABS CBN, to the eyes of many Filipino people, is another form of cheating. Lately, the Phil health managed by lawyers and accountants, was riddled with graft and corruption…another form of cheating.

For my students, no cheating, please!

Being With Mother Nature is Relaxing

              BY Vic Odarve

Everyone knows why spending time with Mother Nature is beneficial—it can reduce stress levels, rejuvenate the mind and body, and be more productive. Thus, we can relax and feel the earth rotating on its axis!

blog-study-math

My Engineering Students-African University

Nature is a great reducer of our stress levels arising from the stressors of daily city life… traffic, financial woes, and life events that pound us down, like a death, family tragedy, natural disaster, etc. These events are out of our control and can cause tremendous struggle and pain for a period of time. But God, the creator of heaven and earth, endowed us with the works of his hands: the great Mother Nature, where a simple visit and meditation for a moment gives us the feeling of bliss that will unplug the burden in our mind and body from performing our repetitive tasks. It really helps unwind upon seeing the beautiful scenery that is before our eyes… pristine rivers and lakes, beaches, mountains, birds and wild animals! It lowers stress hormone levels by appreciating the works of your great hands and relaxing our mind and body.

Moreover, spending time with nature will rejuvenate our minds and bodies. Since our body is at rest, it gives our brain the downtime it needs to recharge—something more easily achieved in nature’s serene environment. Research shows that the fresh air we breathe improves blood pressure and acts as a natural antidepressant by increasing the release and metabolism of serotonin in parts of the brain that control cognitive function and mood. Thus, a feeling of rejuvenation… relieving the stressors that look like a buffalo pulling at our backs in our daily activities!

The scenery of the Mayana ricefields is magnificent and majestic.

It is surprising for us to know that our connections with Mother Nature will keep us more productive, live longer, and keep us healthy. Studies show that when people return to work after spending some time in nature on vacation, they return with more creativity and are able to deal with the problems of the family and their daily work effectively.

Living on this planet is beautiful, but when we are involved in activities that feel like we are struggling in pain, it is wise to give some ample time to unwind with our Mother Nature. It is free of charge. The psalmist and the prophets invite us to spend some time with nature. The Bible puts it this way,

“For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12.

It is no wonder that spending time with the great nature is relaxing. Please visit and relax!

Visit Your Old Folks …Please!

By Vic Odarve

Few people learned that a visit to our old aged parents will keep the elderly physically young, emotionally happy, and create new memories in our lifetime.

Years ago we visited them. Now, they are gone.

If we are living in a far-flung area or across the continent it is wise to visit our elderly at least once a year.  A visit may give a chance to evaluate their health and well – being. You can check your loved ones if they need the extra help of medications as well as finances. In this way we know their physical well-being, making sure that nothing has changed since your last visit.

A visit to our elderly at home also keeps them emotionally happy. Your physical presence is something else engaging and more satisfying than mere words and greeting cards can offer. This is a valuable reminder that you love and thinking of them even you are living far away. This makes them smile more than words can tell. A visit will remind them that you love them before they left on this planet. Your presence and the presence of your children bring light and life into their home and dispels their loneliness. Obviously, a feeling of contentment and the boost of the sensation of joy they get from the visit keep them emotionally happy.

During our heydays. Today, some are living, others are gone.

Most of our old folks live alone since most of the children have all grown-ups, moved out, and have their own families. Thus, some may have experienced depression which is detrimental to their health. A visit can make them feel less lonely and can ward off any depression, social isolation or stress. During our visit, our grandparents sometimes retold old stories about their life and favorite photographs during their heydays. Family history and genealogy of your grandparents and ancestors and the real-life stories and experiences are also often told to the children. These connections brought forth a lot of happy times for both of us and our old aged parents. A sweet and refreshing memory!

Though a visit for our parents in their old age can be seen as burdens and is not an obligation that the youngest generations tried to point out, these youngsters are quick to forget the sacrifices their parents made while they are on their fold. They do not know that their presence keeps the elderly feeling young, makes them happy, and create memories.

Fun and get together during their heydays

Regular visits help maintain existing connections…emotionally, mentally and physically, something more precious than gold. Your visit will brighten their day and yours.  The Bible puts it;

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12

Who knows? Your visit may be the last magical moments you got in touch with your elderly parents because one day before you know it, your grandparents or parents are gone.

Religion and Salvation

                  By Vic Odarve

Nearly almost all religious leaders in all eras of history claimed that by following their religion would mean your salvation. That is why followers have advised their adherence to their rites and customs that go along with their teachings, inculcate a strong belief that their denominations profess to be “the only true way to God, and build to believe that outside the flock has no salvation. Thus, whether the holy books have been twisted, misinterpreted, and perverted the real message, they have one thing in common; their own denomination would save their soul and lead to the eternal life.

Salvation and mathematics must be taught in school

As always in our observations, these religious rituals and customs develop the lives of the followers’ greater depth of understanding and direction toward spiritual perfection. And since we have various denominations around the globe, each group differs on their own beliefs and practices. With these practices, it is believed that followers understand the ultimate purpose of life. With the greater understanding of what they live for, significant numbers of followers embraced their religious teachings. Thus, customs and rituals become the significant features of religion and on salvation.

With the latest trends of teachings around the globe, religious leaders often inculcate to their followers the strong belief that their denominations profess to be “the only true way to God”. They lead the flocks to believe that their salvation is being sourced from heavenly teachings with all sorts of heavenly grace. This belief gives rise to a follower with extreme behavior or extremists, irrespective of religions… Hinduism, New Age, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity. Today, these extremists vowed to fight people that do not belong to their group. Worse, they often have a belief that killing people who opposed their religion is a statement of their martyrdom. But we must think it over that with many religions around the world, they can’t all be right, and more likely the only one serves God.

Jagna Cathedral, Jagna, Bohol

What is ironic is that almost all of them claimed that outside their own religion, there is no salvation. They have on their minds that God favors their denomination over the others. What is more intriguing is that each of these religions has sects with differing beliefs and wants to save during the judgment day. Protestant and Islam religions, for instance, take in different denominations claiming to be the genuine followers of their God. Because of these differences, religious wars break out. Nowadays, in the Middle East, Islam religion is fighting with each other due to misconceptions of the teaching from their holy book. Each one claimed to be the favored ones.

Whatever the beliefs and differences might be brought about by these different religions, one matter is clear; that, that everyone must serve their Lord, your Lord, and my Lord. It is a matter of being one with your Lord and Saviour, the Maker and Redeemer of all matters.  There are good people in all sorts of religions, and it is a matter of being one with whom you believe your God and Saviour by following the true teachings of the holy book.

This beautiful scenery is the work of thy hands

There are complexities along the interpretations and understanding of the word of God breeding confusion among the people. The books of God can be interpreted either directly or indirectly by the different religions and may still result in salvation. Just like in mathematics, there are many methods in finding the roots of an equation, but draw different steps to draw the similar answer. God’s infinite wisdom cannot be fully understood by mankind that like mathematics, different religious beliefs may end with the same result…salvation to the believers. Bible verses explain to us by the Apostle John.

John says (2:24) that Jesus “knew all men,” and then adds (2:25), “and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.”

 Romans 10:9-13.

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Today, we live in a society that has many cultures and many religions and denominations, and we are to treat each with respect. It is good to be tolerant, but that does not mean that we have to agree with everyone in their religious belief.Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” James 4:10.

Then, can religion save us? The belief is ours when it is the time to meet the One sitting on the throne.

Tell-tale Signs That Heaven and Hell Exist

By  Vic Odarve

It was not an ordinary day. Final exams proceeded as scheduled and everybody seemed busy. But not for this student! I had seen him following me for several days until we met at my office and he asked me this question,” Sir, do heaven and hell exist?’

San Pedro Cathedral Church -Davao City, Philippines.

I was dumbfounded! I did not expect an engineering student asking this question. Maybe he forgot that I was not handling theological courses. At first, I hesitated to entertain but he looked serious! Then I remembered Sir Isaac Newton. Like Newton, this student was trying to investigate the geographical location of heaven and hell. Or if these things really exist! Newton, unique among scientists, devoted the final part of his life, finding the location of hell and heaven. He failed to find until his demise!

Pilgrimage Center, Madonna University, Nigeria

This school is run by priests and nuns. As expected the doctrine of hell and heaven is taught. The subject may be incorporated in other courses such as theology, philosophy, logic, etc. But, to my mind, the same thing; that all Christians must know if hell or heaven exists!

LOCATION OF HEAVEN AND HELL

The Bible does not give an exact place or location. Our common belief is that hell and heaven are places where departed loved ones reside. That is after death!  Off limits for the living! That’s why we are just imagining the existence and these things remain a mystery. These are unseen for the living! Things unseen can exist if you believe it. It is through faith that things unseen works. It is the strong faith of life after death that hell and heaven existence really depend on. Others consider afterlife as myth or superstitious! But the Bible, written and inspired by infinite wisdom, describes hell and heaven.

Saint Pedro Calungsod, Malbog, Jagna, Philippines

Hell is believed to be the eternal state of punishment for the sinners after death. It is also the place for the wicked people- with the fire that never goes out. Sinners including angels are confined here until the Day of Judgment. It is a place of real torment.

Heaven, on another hand, is opposite. It is a perfect place of supernatural happiness where God, angels, and other heavenly beings reside. In his spiritual vision in the Book of Revelation, John describes heaven as follows;

22 I saw no temple in the city for the Lord God, Master of the universe, and the Lamb are themselves its temple.

23 The city has no need of the light of the sun or the moon since God’s Glory is its light and the Lamb is its lamp.

24 The nations will walk in its light and the kings of the earth will bring their treasures to it.

25 Its gates will not be closed at sunset, for there will be no night there.

Heaven and hell are places for spiritual existence. It could just be in our imagination because these exist in other dimensions. It’s another plane! In mathematics, it is another coordinate system of life. It is through death that gives birth to this dimension. Like Mathematics, logarithm and Laplace transformations give birth to another realm of the mathematical plane. But God taught us these things in advance so that we can prepare for the next level of existence. It’s another life plane. For as long as man is breathing, hell and heaven exist in our imagination. But as a man passes death unto life, hell and heaven are real places!

Jagna, Bohol Cathedral

TELL -TALE SIGNS THAT THEY EXIST

With the advance of technology, many things that cannot be seen and difficult to understand are slowly coming to our perception in a clearer picture. These are telltale signs that they exist! Blackhole, for instance, could not be seen as even light cannot escape its immense gravitational pull. It is the bending of light which showed that they exist. Dark matters and dark energy, too, exist like black holes. Gospel writers like Matthew, Luke, Mark, Paul, and John in revelation showed that in their time, had seen the heaven opened. Book of Revelation describes more what heavens are all about!

Spiritual connection builds better mathematics

Dreaming, a mental activity that occurs during sleep allows departed beloved to communicate the living. This is one way the two parallel level of existence interacts! Though mathematically, no intersection is possible on two parallel lines, spirit beings and the living beings intersect dramatically through dreams. Remember the biblical Joseph and Daniel? Both communicated God in their difficult trying times through dreams! God- the spirit being communicated mankind- the living flesh! Existing in two separate planes of dimensions!

The Bible is the only book that discloses the way going to heaven and the gate going to hell. So what shall we do? Read the bible now! Do not delay! Learn its wisdom to be wise and practice its doctrine to be safe- for the kingdom of heaven is at hand! In heaven, poor and rich live in harmony! Be there and see the One sitting on the throne! Jesus invites you!

Do Not Worry;Be Happy

By Vic Odarve

Happiness is the universal feeling that God has given to mankind; hence, we all aspire to experience more of it. Happy people are productive and the actions of one happy person can create a ripple effect that can eventually influence others. Happiness is a matter of choice; by changing perspective in life, you can make every moment a happy moment. Do not worry; it is your right to be happy!

Mayana ricefields are the works of thy Hands

God gives this feeling of happiness that mankind will experience, feel and enjoy the beauty of His creation; that is why the psalmist often rendered songs of love and joy and praises for His great works. Nature is an ornament of His wondrous works of thy hands; from great fields and valleys, sparrows and water lilies, and into the vast cosmic ocean where heavenly bodies form an enormous web that spreads out in all directions of the universe and beyond. It is the feeling of happiness that humbles ourselves before the Maker and worships Him as great creator and the source of all things. It is a universal feeling. Whether you are born from wedlock, broken homes, abandoned families, etc.…. it is your right to be happy!

Happy people have better relationships with friends, family members, and loved ones, and doing healthier lifestyles. It can influence others. Most of these people are optimistic in life. In the recently  boxing match between Pacquiao and Thurman held in US, Pacquiao is optimistic that he has still have punches that hammered de La Hoya and Margarito to their knees – a belief that the age of 40 years old is just a number. In the end, he won and became a champion; hence a pure joy and excitement for him and his countless fans. Happy people often take an effort to spend a time to recreate, relax, and dine with friends and loved ones. Happiness, indeed, influences others to have more likely to accomplish the goal in life.

All must be happy during fiesta celebration

Happiness is a matter of choice; but, that being happy does not mean all are perfect. If something went wrong, find out why and there is always a way in going right. And one thing that counts; that being still here, alive and kicking, it is wise to spend every moment a happy moment. You can have flaws and misfortunes, storms and fatigue in the relationship, but you learn from all these failures. You can build up confidence and courage and learn that to be happy is not to have a perfect life.  In addition, there are many people who love you unconditionally and depend on you. They want to see your life happy. Choose to be happy and enjoy life!

Even the holy Bible, God tells us not to be worried. The bible puts it in Matthew 6:25-30

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Jagna town panoramic view from Barangay Malbog

Never give up on happiness, for life is a God-given gift to mankind.
There is no better way than loving every minute because it is your right to be happy; you live today and gone tomorrow. You never know… any of us could wake up tomorrow realizing we lose someone we love! Nobody knows!

So, do not worry; be happy it is your right!

Fake Christians; Saying One Thing and Doing Another

By Vic Odarve

From neighborhoods and elsewhere these Christians are saying one thing and doing another!

They manage illegal businesses, exploits people, and corrupt; yet pious outside but rotten inside. With just a few months from illegal business such as drugs trafficking and money laundering, they become an instant millionaire. More or less of these businessmen exploited their workers by paying low or underpaid salaries or under contractual status. Still, others are corrupt by not paying due taxes to the government. But observe them during religious rites and ceremonies, they give offerings and talk like a true Christian; that is, saying one thing but doing another. They are fake Christians!

Pilgrims attended the celebration. Some are fake christians!

Several pieces of research showed that most millionaires were traced from illegal businesses such as drug trafficking. Their unexplained wealth and various acquired properties cannot be drawn up with proper documents. Such was the case of Senator Leila de Lima which many people believed that she has received millions from the drug lords operating inside the Bilibid to finance her campaign during the election. To date, she is languishing in jail. Being a religious person, she has already forgiven the “Judases” in her life, including her former driver and lover, Ronnie Dayan, who has turned against her. “I commend these sinners to God almighty and offer them mercy,” the senator stated.

In employment, working class people which are the driving force behind the capitalist production, are exploited by having low salaries and contractual status. Although they contributed profits in the business operation and considered as the core builders of beautiful palaces and buildings, their employers seldom give them incentives and benefits enjoyed by permanent employees. Dubai, for example, a city renowned for glitz and boast the world’s tallest building, migrant workers who build its grandeur are paid below the standard wages.  These low paid migrant workers are often housed in filthy conditions and treated like a slave during the dark ages. In the Philippine setting, the end of contract scheme employed by some employers deprives the workers and their families of enjoying the benefits given in the law.

Very religious

There are millionaires who often donate large sums to religious activities and politicians during the campaign period, acquired more profit from their businesses by not paying the right taxes to the government. To date, various business magnates are under reviewed by the government. To name few, Tan has almost P30 billion tax deficiencies, the Mighty corporation has an estimated excise tax liability of P 9.564 billion, and Dunkin doughnuts have also billions of unpaid taxes. But when questioned by media men, they seemed philanthropic but are practising another.

A novel interpretations of Christian doctrines teach that saying one thing and doing another are persons with questionable credibility. Credibility is our own choice of path in our life. It is a commitment; to be a liar or not. In math, it is a domain, the lower and upper limits in integral Calculus, representing the area that covers your life. It is believability. If credibility is questionable, a “credibility gap” is said to exist. Nobody wants to befriend you except people with the same colour as yours!

Today, there is spate of fake Christians; saying one thing but doing another!

Both Excited and Terrified by Duterte’s Presidency

                                                           By Vic Odarve

Fed up with traditional politicians and driven for strong choice for a change by Duterte’s leadership, Filipinos are cautious for the coming years…both excited and terrified. People are excited to see a leader who can decide and execute the laws of the land effectively to curb drug abuses, bring corrupt government officials down to their knees, and improve the standard of living. But at the same time, these people are cautious, if not terrified, because of his governance style coupled by his character deficits, and hawkish foreign policies.  It is indeed terrifying and exciting!

President Rody Duterte

President Rody Duterte

As known from his campaign trail which draws millions of his followers that gave him election victory, immediately after elected to office, he pounced down illegal drugs and gave an ultimatum to all drug lords, users, and pushers. After visiting China, Japan and other Asian countries, Duterte have brought investments to the country to propel our economy, and offer job opportunities to millions of jobless. He further cleaned up cronyism to his cabinet and other government posts, and even challenged the whole Energy Regulatory Board personnel to file their resignation due to corruption. These actions have been met with immense positivity from the population and signaled to the country that he was not only committed to his cause but also serious about cleansing government scalawags.

These kids have an illusion of better Philippines

These kids have an illusion of better Philippines

But not all are happy. As the wind changed its course from the traditional politics to unorthodox method, his governing style was saddled with his character deficits, and hawkish foreign policies which drew an ire from some of his supporters from both branches of the government. Some legislators believed that his foul mouth is wrecking the Philippine economy and scaring away investors; his conflicting statements on foreign policy is baffling lawmakers on what direction he is heading to. Further, repeated curses to US President Barack Obama, the United Nations and the European Union for questioning his tough anti-drugs crackdown affected our international relations. The ratification of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, he called it “obviously wrong” and the way he treated the Marcos burial are among the few of his pronouncements that reveal his personality. Most people are terrified!

Food shortage due to El Nino

Food shortage due to El Nino

Though the future seems uncertain as he journeys on his presidential term to complete, there have been always a negative and positive reactions. Like a Newton’s law of motion, there is always an equal and opposite reaction. Duterte cannot do the job alone considering the various problems the country is facing. People believe that presidential advisers may brilliantly steer him into a success and to keep him on right track and away from doomsday leadership.

Despite of these uncertainties, people from all walks of life are drawn to him because they want a change and they are tired of all sweet-talking, fork-tongued politicians who are very religious and often promises reform but corrupt. We have demonstrated for the past 30 years that traditional leadership did not work.  That’s why Filipinos have to go abroad to find greener pasture. Can Duterte rise to the occasion and lead this nation to greatness again?  The answer is yours and the way events turned out people are both excited and terrified.

Old Photographs; Images of our Life

By Vic Odarve

Old photographs reopened eyes to our past, re-discovered roots, and experienced its beauty and culture of our ancestors. It gives pictures where we come from and see our place where we have spent our childhood years. It builds a deeper connection to the past; the ancestors, great-grandparents, relatives, and friends. And knowing where we come from enable people to experience the beauty and culture from old folks tread to the new generation. Old photographs are images of our life.

Old pictures remind us of the beauty of the places where we have spent our childhood days, playing with our childhood friends…flying kite, running, walking along the mountain trails where our grandparents used before.  These are the places where the generations of our families were born, lived and died. Pictures captured these places vividly which enable the present generation to visit and wonder how their lives were spent before.

Inspiring and imaginative, iconic old pictures teach us how to remember those we miss most, no matter how long they’ve been gone. These are the people we miss in our life, and all they still mean to us. Though most photographs are black and white, they still bring the vivid pictures of the lives of our ancestors. Some of us may have inherited their physical features …the curve of our nose, and the color of the skin and eyes. Some of us are the crystal clear image of our grandparents…a living blueprint from the old generation.

Great great grandparents

Great great grandparents

With their photographs, we learned how our old folks lived and spent their lives. Their important events captured in the pictures…showcased how their beautiful culture and tradition flourished in their time. There are also pictures showing working together or bayanihan… a tradition which for now is seldom practice.

Yes, old pictures say a thousand words as the camera captures everything. It is like a narrative of your life which you are a part of the generation; rekindle our thoughts to remember those we miss most, no matter how long they have gone. These old photographs also encourage the present generation to visit the land of their birth; attend the great annual festival or fiestas of the villages to rediscover their lost ancestral roots. Old pictures are really the images of our life.

Advise our President, Please!

                  By Vic Odarve

It is the president’s adviser role …to advise and make recommendations to the president on all crucial issues facing the nation’s policies. These people must be heavily involved in all policy areas and attuned to the needs of the president on the key issues. More so, advisers are responsible for his good image both in and out of the country’s spectrum; knew exactly the direction what the president wanted in our domestic and foreign policy. Advise our president, please!

Press briefing by the President

Press briefing by the President

Presidential speeches, whether done in local and international settings, must be reviewed and filtered so as not to create different interpretations from the media men, supporters, and foes; and distort the true meaning on what the president wants to project. Local and idiomatic expressions, which often the source of misunderstanding, if possible, must be controlled. Such was the case on the traffic woes that the president said by December people can travel just 5 minutes Cubao to Makati, condemnation of KAPA as fraud scheme, and his rape jokes during the press conference.

In like manner, presidential decisions both on domestic and international issues seemed to convey more questions than what the citizens are expecting. Whether politically motivated or not, the advisers must see to it that these decisions may not create chaos and confusions among the Filipinos. Such were the cases of Marcos burial, abrupt closing of the offices of the money investing schemes sprouting throughout the country, and our policy towards America, China, and ASEAN neighbors.

Harvesting rice in Mayana- Beautiful scenery is the work of His Hands

The President’s life is not as beautiful as this scenery in Mayana

In almost all head of states like a president, a team of advisers plays an important role in their decisions. The president and advisers have to dance in tango…harmony in every step. The president growing problems in giving controversial statements and his decisions in some of our domestic issues can be addressed with advisers who knew well what the president’s wanted directions. On the other hand, the President is obligated to consult his advisers before making decisions.

Speeches, whether colorful, sarcastic or not or deemed inappropriate for public consumption, must be addressed; and decisions, whether politically motivated, payback after elections or not, must also be discussed with his advisers. But, if the President hesitates to hear the pieces of their advice and just follow his own instinct, multiple problems may crop up along his term… a huge problem for the presidential spokesperson. As we see it, this is the problem of the current administration.

Advise him, please! Before it is too late.

Vote for my Presidential Candidate,Please!

             By Vic Odarve

As the executive branch consists of several departments, a candidate for president must be an experienced leader who has a strong authority to manage and direct the activities; take quick action on problems facing the nation, such as corruption and hardened criminals, and must have a strong character to react smartly and cleverly under stressful conditions. Leadership experience, tough in fighting corruption and criminals, and strong character to hold up pressures attribute a great president. So, on this coming presidential derby on May, vote for my candidate, please!

Presidential candidates debate- Philippines politics

Presidential candidates debate- Philippines politics

A presidential candidate with considerable leadership experience can propel the direction on his decision intelligently on various issues; run the country with authority in harmony with other government branches, and understand to what extent are his duties and responsibilities.  He can rely not much on his advisers as with traditional politicians usually do; establish a reputation of not favoring the elite few. As a seasoned leader, he must be strong and decisive; widely seen as better able to handle the responsibilities of being commander in chief, and more often align with people views on important issues facing the country. His leadership experience counts!

A would be president must be a proven leader in fighting corruption and criminality which every leader always promises but failed significantly for the past several decades. With various syndicates on drugs and criminal elements eluding the justice system, a candidate must be tough, iron-fisted, and fear no one whether these persons are bigwigs and famous in the society. Likewise, he must have a  will and determination to bring corrupt government officials to justice irrespective of party’s affiliation. These corrupt public servants are known as the “looting machine” explain why this country is not rising. So, we need a tough president to address corruption, crime, and drug problems.

Campaign promises

Campaign promises

As the job requires decision-making both domestic and international issues, the position takes a special kind of person with a strong character… someone tough, smart, and driven. These attributes are necessary allowing him to implement laws and hold up the working situation in its order under the pressures of  various peppering problems plaguing the nation such as  the South China Sea, terrorist attack, secessionist, and economy. He may not be a gifted speaker like Hitler and Mussolini but could drum up support for his policies from congress and draw big followers from the common masses. He should promise to tear up the feudal lord system and make the country great again. He must have a strong backing from the nation’s minorities, and argue for realistic solutions to problems, rather than rhetoric, and above all, bring unity.

As the campaign period about to end with various trends shown in the surveys and social media who are on the top standing, the result may twist and turn  different comes the election day. Believe it or not, people are tired of criminals and corrupt public officials, weak and indecisive leaders, and traditional politicians with the same campaign promises since the beginning of the democratic elections. People need change; a leader who could chase and eliminate these perennial problems and display mature composure in the decision making while under pressures.

With proven background experience in curving criminality and drug problems, unblemished record in graft and corruption as public officials, spend less for election-related activity, and draw a large crowd during the campaign trail, he will be the next president of the Republic of the Philippines. He is not fighting for his own glory but to bring hope to the countless masses of people who are poor, hungry, oppressed, and without a future.

Secrets Why Students Excel in Math

                   By Vic Odarve

Math intimidates and frightens the students but there are few who did excel or perform far better and more consistently than their peers. Simply, they have their secrets…put a regular effort in their studies, hang with classmates with similar goals, and build a reputation for excellence. By keeping regular study on the notes after the class develops good retention of the subject; associating with fellow good learners can improve time management and developing positive attitude in order to excel. No wonder, these students are on the top of their Math class.

Engineering Students 200 level

Engineering Students 200 level

The study showed that the first in a two- hour lecture is the most effective period for memory retention. Faced with this dilemma, a review after the class is needed to recover part of the time where memory retention was least. Reading the notes for a few minutes after classroom strengthen further your memory. Any lapses and misunderstood notes can be easily corrected. Develop this habit regularly makes math understanding perfect!

Another behavior among students who excel in mathematics is that they select their friends. By keeping in a company and hanging around with good classmates or friends who always study mathematics in their school also bring a tremendous change in their behavior, lifestyles, manners, and actions. Oftentimes students slowly and slowly emulate one’s friend’s way of living in one way or another. Look, associate, and surround  only  with friends that give with positive influence; hang only to those that are supporting and enhancing their life, and filter their background and stick to one with the same mission and ambitions in their life. Select friends that are good math performers; they belong to their tribes. Top math performers have good time management for a study and outside classroom activities. They often hang with them.

Lastly, these students build a proper attitude to excel in mathematics. They do always the best that they can. In a classroom, they listen intently how teachers did the steps in solving math problems and think mathematically more than memorizing of facts. They often spot patterns in solving problems; systematically seek why and prove the steps. They always strive for the best grade. With competent teachers, coupled with a positive attitude, these students develop a kind of flexibility and creativity; hence, excel in mathematics.

With proper motivation and empowerment from a competent math teacher coupled with these behavioral tips and secrets from students who excel in math, more students will be no longer intimidated and frightened in mathematics.

Drink Moderately, Please!

     By Vic Odarve

While doctors confirmed that alcoholic drinks have benefits to human health, they often have a precautionary warning to the users… drink moderately. Research shows that moderate drinking does have health benefits physically and mentally; drinking in groups promotes enjoyment and friendship, but if taken excessively, alcohol destroys lives. Drink moderately, please!

            Wines for all occasions

In order to have some substantial health benefits from alcoholic beverages, one must have a moderate alcohol consumption. The study shows that a moderate intake can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, protect against erectile dysfunction, helps prevent against the common cold, and in the process may lengthen your life.  Moderate amounts of alcohol raise levels of ‘good’ cholesterol, which are associated with greater protection against heart disease; reduced the chances of erectile dysfunction by 25 to 30 percent. Further research indicates that moderate drinkers were 23 percent less likely to develop cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease and other kinds of dementia. A stunning health benefits!

Old folks at home during fiesta

Since time immemorial, humans have been enthralled by alcohol.  Alcoholic drinks go hand in hand with many important celebrations such as birthdays, vacations, and anniversaries. The wine has been used as all sorts of stabilizing social purposes; promote social interaction, and become a part of the modern lifestyle. Few pleasures in life are more satisfying and memorable than sharing a splendid bottle of wine or cocktail around a dinner table filled with friends. It is a hallmark of almost all of the get-together party and other sorts of gathering; hence drinking wine facilitates social bonding. A word of caution, ”drink moderately”, in order to enjoy with your friends and loved ones.

Drinking beer during birthday party

Drinking beer during the birthday party

An alcoholic excess has also meant appalling human wretchedness… alcohol has long shown us to be destructive. Excessive alcohol intake may destroy your life. There is an increased risk of developing diseases such as liver damage (cirrhosis), damage to the pancreas, certain cancers, heart problems, sexual problems and other conditions. Sometimes heavy drinkers strain a longtime friendship when friends decide to socialize with you less often because you misbehave when got drunk; or behave in an antisocial way. A dark side of people who often gets drunk!

In general, the more you drink, the greater the risk. Even the Scripture condemned heavy drinkers of alcoholic beverages. Noah became drunk; the result was immorality and family trouble. Lot was so drunk that he did not know what he was doing; this also led to immorality. Genesis 9:20-38.

Drink moderately, please!

Life is a Struggle

         By Vic Odarve

Life is a struggle whether one is poor, rich, and powerful. Poor people, which constitute the largest segment of the world’s population, have to struggle in order to meet both ends …foods, shelter, and education. Wealthy and the bigwigs of society have to fight drugs, alcohol, relationship, sickness, and many more. World leaders, too, powerful as they look to be, have to struggle for the survival of their leadership due to political adversaries, deteriorating economy, and failed foreign policy. Whatever the colors and society, people must have to struggle in order to survive and prosper!

Life in the rural areas

         Life in rural areas

According to a UN expert, nearly one-fifth of the world population or 1.4 billion people cannot fulfill the most basic needs every day. A few decades back poverty is concentrated in rural areas in most developing countries, but a recent study showed that urban poverty is also increasing as fast as cities are growing. These areas are refugees of drug addicts, criminals, and many epidemics that ravage a nation wholesome environments. Inadequate access to safe water, poor sanitation, overcrowding, and insecure residential status make poor people’s life miserable!

Life struggle does not spare the rich and famous. Although not on basic needs, they suffer in life lingering sickness, drugs, alcohol, relationships, and scandals. Singer Celine Dion is struggling in pain trying to make the best of last Christmas with cancer-stricken husband Rene, who is now battling throat cancer for the last two years. Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, had reached the pinnacle of success in the business world but ended his life struggling with pancreatic cancer in 2011.  A few years back, the singer-actor Chan, son of Jackie Chan pleaded guilty in a Beijing court for providing a venue for drug users and was sentenced to six months in jail. Life is a struggle, poor and rich alike!

President Rody Duterte

History always reminds us that in order to survive and sustain their autocratic governance leaders have to struggle to stay in power. In countries like Russia, North Korea, and China, the leaders have to consolidate their power with super-wealthy backers, torture political opponents in jail at a moment’s notice, and maintain secret agents. At home, for example, Duterte also struggles over his foreign policy in China and the United States, a problem on metro manila’s traffic, and EJK’s over the war on drugs. These problems are causing the political oppositions to go against the president, promote jeepney’s strike, and various human rights demonstrations. As always in the history of world leaders, their lives are also in deep trouble and struggling in pain.

In the academic world, both professors and students struggle to learn and adopt the new technology the world has to offer. In order to shorten the academic years for a college degree, most colleges and universities adopted the 3 terms period per year schooling.

My Engineering Students-African University

Thus, professors, as well as the students, have to cope up with the completion of the syllabi for the given time frame…like feeling a huge rhinoceros are running after them at their backs. It is the modern world coupled with modern gadgets and inventions that imparting learnings to our students become faster and easier. But we have to struggle so as not to be left behind.

Whether we like it or not, there is no way to avoid the struggles in life. And in every struggle, there is heartbreak, emotional trauma, and setback. But all these things can make people stronger and better.

Believe it or not, the human struggle ends when life ends.

Nature’s Christmas Tree on Display

         By Vic Odarve

Seemingly unseen by many urban people and usually taken for granted or forgotten by the rural folks, nature’s Christmas trees are displayed in some parts of the African continent in a scintillating beauty…simple, unique, and awesome. From the ordinary palm tree hang a number of bird’s nests resembling Christmas toys, cards, and gifts. Unique as it is, birds are jumping in the bough of the trees as if singing the Christmas carols; celebrating the incoming Christmas seasons that Christians also rejoice. It is an awesome reminder for mankind that the tree, untrimmed and untouched by human skillful hands, looks like a Christmas tree. It is a nature’s Christmas tree on display!

Simply from the common palm trees, they are decorated similarly to our own made Christmas tree. The tree is real and untrimmed; simply the birds’ nests hanging on the leaves as decoration, and birds gather around the nests reminded us like children exchanging gifts. Birds sing in unison as if a choir calling their presence of God the Almighty; they do this at the end of their daily activities before going to rest. The tree attracted everyone and people know how they loved the nests hang from the leaves of the tree. And it looks like a man-made Christmas tree. Absolutely beautiful and so simple!

This nature’s Christmas tree is something unique as it brightens the spirit of everyone. Instead of cards, expensive

gifts and long ribbons and garlands made out of beads to accentuate the color of your choice, birds’ nests were hung on the tree itself. Nature’s decors it for an elegant look! It never fails to bring smiles to people’s faces and proudly invites everyone for the perfect holiday season. People say the tree was the coolest, prettiest, and perfect Christmas tree. It is a unique Christmas tree; keep the people fully reminded and exactly what they wanted on a Christmas tree.

It is an awesome nature’s reminder! This tree reminds us of our strong spiritual connection to our Christian belief and to some extent, its display gives us a more joyous celebration; hence glorifying our God. It also shows our strong kinship and oneness with nature; the palm tree once again painted the scenes of serenity and grandeur described by the psalmist in the word of God. Although Christmas tree tradition dates back to the 16th or 15th century, which devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes, to date we would do well to remember that they are ultimately symbols of the One who gave himself to mankind.

And as we greet the Christmas celebration, this palm tree decorated with birds’ nests is indeed the simple, unique, and an awesome Christmas tree that nature wants to display to mankind!

Merry Christmas to all!

Why do People Flock at Elele Pilgrimage Center?

                     By Vic Odarve

In spite of the weakening of Christian faith in our modern world nowadays, the monthly program among the faithful at Pilgrimage Centre, Elele town, Rivers State is still a big draw to thousands of Christians, and even non-Christians from all parts of Nigeria, Africa. Usually held every first Friday of the months, pilgrims come to the place for breaking of curses/yoke, pray for special favors such as healing from life- threatening illnesses, and for life-changing counseling and transformation. This power packed monthly celebration, brings all Nigerians from all walks of life to this place of worship.

Pilgrims attended the celebration

Most Nigerians believe curses from ancestors such as shedding innocent blood, demonic societies, rituals and manipulations, and many others. The ministry runs the prayer to guide and teach the people how to free from satanic strongholds and complete freedom from curses and yoke. The pilgrims with the guidance of the priests, through prayers, provide sound, salient and scriptural insight on how to discover, destroy and be delivered from these evil power. The gatherings, they believe, lay them to be sincerely and completely free from curses and the yoke.

While some are interested freeing the bondage on yoke and curses, others join the pilgrimage for special favors. Couples, barren or not, come and attend hoping to bear more kids. In Nigeria, most women do not embrace birth control as it goes against many of their cultures. That is why couples want to have as many children as they can. Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, and previous attempts by the government to encourage adults to have fewer children have failed. The United Nations has estimated that the population of Nigeria could grow from 160m to 400m by 2050. In some cases, sickly and some people who could not afford to see doctors also attend this spiritual celebration to seek miracles for healing and cure; others have also joined for the solution of their numerous problems such as, unemployment and fiscal troubles.

The peace that Jesus gives is not fragile like the peace the world gives.

Pilgrimage Center at Elele, Rivers State, Nigeria

Of course, higher intellectual in our modern society in the pursuit of peace and happiness yearns to do closer communion with God Almighty. These people, most of them suffer from heavy burdens in life and lifelong struggling in pain over the devils, feel the journey to this pilgrimage center more life fulfilling and challenging. They will receive life counseling and transformation; receive religious grace and peace of mind. There they seek, in concert with thousands of our Christian brethren, spiritual nourishment, and deliverance. Priests who have distinguished themselves are chosen and be used as instruments of such purpose. The pilgrimage symbolizes the return to our Creator and hopefully to find peace and tranquility of this troubled world. Like Solomon, with all its riches and glory, these pilgrims want to find peace by surrendering themselves to God.

Highlights of the pilgrimage activities are day and midnight masses, testimonies, and inspirational talks from Catholic priests and bishops. Father Edeh, a Catholic priest and a man of deep religious faith, is the founder of the pilgrimage center. He is a household name in the area of breaking of curses/yokes, and healing of the sick through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. His miraculous works remain very popular and unequaled in the history of the Catholic Church in Nigeria. His counseling and teaching have molded the daily lives of these multitudes, giving them spiritual and moral guidance, certainty, and comfort.

With all the confusion of life and broken dreams from curses and yoke; asking special favors and healing; one must join the pilgrimage to Pilgrimage Centre at Catholic Prayer Ministry of the Holy Spirit at Elele, Rivers State, Nigeria, and the largest pilgrimage center in Africa. Attending this power packed monthly celebration will bring you peace with God.

Want to Work Abroad? Think it Twice!

                        By Vic Odarve

All over the world, people want to work away from their homeland to find a better life but  a startling number have awful stories to tell … maltreatment and poor working conditions, homesickness, and untimely job services termination. Working hours and environment are too hot and cruel to endure with; security problems of work areas makes their world smaller and isolated. But the most stressful and hardest thing of all is the pain of leaving one’s homeland …where loved ones, precious family, and friends are left behind. In some cases, overseas workers are caught unaware that termination of their services could be done anytime as their employers wish to. Want to work abroad? Think it twice!

OFW Nigeria

          OFW Nigeria

Less fortunate overseas workers, particularly OFW, revealed that working hours and environment are too hot to endure with; security problems of the workplace dictates not to leave the area without a police escort. Extended working hours, vacation leave without pay, and absence of bonuses or incentives feature the working conditions. These conditions are common to those working abroad as household maids or domestic helpers.  These workers often tell their harrowing stories of extreme oppression from their employers; sometimes a darker side of the stories include fleeing from their bosses. But there are also beautiful pictures; some more successful expatriates hired on respected high management positions, are treated and cared like royalties in a strange land.

Dubai Airport

              Dubai Airport

Leaving one’s homeland is a litmus test…where loved ones, precious family, and friends are left behind. Missing many moments …sitting on the bench enjoying the moonlights, sharing the joys and laughter with your wife and kids, relatives, and many more. The comfort, joy, and the memories of a place where someone grew up always haunting and playing the minds of the workers. These are gentle reminders how homesickness affects their lives in a strange land. That is why one of the workers wants to go home after a few months working in Africa. He realized that money, material and other lures of any kind are not as important to his family at home. He said. “I want to return to my precious family, even if I die of hunger.”

 Picnics and celebrations at home

       Picnics and celebrations at home

There are stories on fake working contracts signed at the homeland with the company representatives only to be altered with another one upon arrival at the working station. Others, too have the working contracts duration but not followed persistently by the employers.  Employers can terminate your services anytime at their own will. Some are unexpectedly fired from their job with no explanation given other than telling that his services are no longer needed. Still others, due to worsening peace and order situation were sent home immediately for their safety. That is, whether contracts are expiring or not. Such was the case of OFW working in Libya, Iraq, or Syria and other African countries.

OFWs' claim baggage section

Lack of job opportunities, lures of a better life in the future, and meeting all the financial needs for the family drive these OFWs to work abroad. Sending money back home becomes a source of fulfillment and a sense of responsibility. And for those who retire and have savings are fortunate when an awful golden age comes. But for those who returned home due to untimely work termination, abusive employers, and homesickness, have to find alternatives at their homeland to make a living.

Life is a struggle. The option to work or not to work abroad is yours. It has a brighter and darker sides, too. So, think it twice before the sun sets in the western sky! God bless!

Why do some Universities Teach Better?

         By Vic Odarve

Some universities teach better than others; hence producing the best quality of graduates. People believe that the performance of these universities largely depends on their management style; may a private or federal government funded. Whatever the reasons, these universities that teach better have common denominators, as follows;

IMG_00000025

1.Highly qualified lecturers/teachers. This is the main factor that contributes to the student’s academic success or educational quality. Mathematically speaking, knowledge to be imparted from the lecturers is directly proportional to what lecturers are having. With highly qualified lecturers, there is a predetermined body of knowledge that the teacher should pass on to the student.

These universities believe that the qualifications and competency of the lecturers bear some direct correlation to their work as lecturers.  Retention of these lecturers/teachers maintains the good performance of the institution.  Good lecturers foster student mastery of more rigorous and challenging academic contents. They can create a positive learning environment in the classroom. These lecturers allow students to feel comfortable, safe and engaged – something that all students deserve. The academic success of any school depends on the instruction provided by the hands of able, high quality and committed teachers.

Engineering students

       Engineering students

2. Strong management supports to teachers/lecturers/students. These universities do have a strong support to the lecturers as well as students by having seminars, upgrading activities, incentives, and other forms of relevant enrichments.  Some do have programs for students such as allowing them to spend time in a clinic, establishments, or school to observe the work of a professional in the field. In most cases, the students may participate in the work in addition to field trips and on the job training.

3. Sufficient and modern laboratory facilities. These universities do have better and updated laboratory equipment and apparatus to meet the advancement of science and technology. Hands- on- training develops student skills and first -hand knowledge application from the classroom lectures. Students can conduct experiments that replicate or illustrate a scientific principle introduced in the course. Laboratory experiments are important in courses such as Physics, acoustics, thermodynamics, and mechanics. Laboratory sections usually augment lectures or discussions in the classrooms. Speech laboratories allow students to listen to audio tapes or use other interactive forms of instruction. These laboratories can provide necessary training for students’ creativity, insight, and analytical skills.

Advising student

                        As adviser

4. Offer competitive salaries. These universities offer attractive salaries to the lecturers. Good salaries tend to attract more competent teachers. The managements believe that with good salaries, lecturers would stay longer at the university, meet the cost of living, bring contentment to the teaching profession, and drive motivation in the day to day activities in the classroom.  The management does not focus too much on monetary profit.

Universities with the above features teach the students better; hence producing world class graduates – extremely well prepared for high skilled-level jobs globally and potential for future world leaders and great statesmen. In contrast, low-performing schools do not give much attention to the above school environments.

Search on Aliens Thrills Humanity

                 By Vic Odarve

To date human effort to look for aliens still without success.

Although there is no direct proof of any aliens existing beyond Earth, the presence of many stars that harbors planets, liquid waters are found abound in some solar  system, and biblical account that recorded their visits make it difficult to believe that we are alone. Our universe is truly big and there are Earth-like planets located in the so-called Goldilocks zones- neither too cold nor hot.  Further, liquid water, which is the key ingredient of life, is common in some of these stars. The historical accounts written in the bible and other sacred documents, coupled with remains from ancient civilizations such as big stone edifices and the likes, prove that civilizations far advanced had once existed. And looking for these aliens thrills mankind.

These kids learn aliens from pictures and stories.

These kids learn aliens from pictures and stories.

Just think! Our universe is big with billions of stars spreading out in the vast cosmic ocean. Our Milky Way is just like a tiny drop of sand in long and winding beaches in our planet earth. Scientists think that there are aliens out there in the midst of these stars. An aggressive search for intelligent aliens started in 1970 when we sent Pioneer and Voyager missions carrying messages from Earth to the journey into interstellar space. And what’s more, astronomers do round the clock monitoring on radio waves and laser pulses to enhance the chances of detecting civilization many light years away. Scientists believed that the number of habitable worlds in our galaxy is certainly in the tens of billions. Recently, scientists have found a star flicker-light years away- known as KIC 846-2852, maybe an alien megastructure, a sign of alien civilization. And it draws an excitement, but still not yet conclusive.

Billions of galaxies are out there.

Billions of galaxies are out there.

And there is good news! Water seems to abound in some of these solar systems. Water is a key ingredient for life as we know it. And liquid water, it turns out, is fairly common out there. In our own solar system, Europa, a moon of Jupiter, appears to have a liquid ocean. Recently, the Curiosity rover found liquid water on Mars, a condition that could support life. Further, Comet Orbiter Rosetta has already sniffed out oxygen molecules…all that are important in life. But still, no intelligent beings exist there.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge is ancient works with help from aliens.

But wait a minute! These extraterrestrial beings had already visited Earth! Abraham received three alien visitors! They came down from the kingdom of heaven. They were our Lord and the two angels. They even talked and dined with him. Genesis 18:1-10Moses, too, had seen and talked with one of these visitors in Mount Sinai. He was allowed to see his back only, but not his face. Simply because he was a sinner! And He said,” Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live”. Exodus 33:20. Then, there was a man named Jesus, who claimed that he was not from this world. He even claimed that he existed with his father before the world began! Luke 23:45 Then, there are some more! Ancient peoples could not have built gigantic and amazing structures such as Machu Pichu, the Great Pyramid, the Nazca Lines or even Stonehenge without a help from outside. The aliens must have done it. These structures are the living proofs that they were here before.

Pyramid of Egypt

Pyramid of Egypt

Our consistent effort to search for aliens still without success. But the thrill to meet them at least keeps our imagination fertile. Some scientists believed that if universe’s other intelligent beings have all died out, we are likely to, in the future. But if we find them, we may have hope to survive.

But the bible says, “Yes, they are coming soon and we can see them face to face! (Rev 22:4). The time is at hand. Believed and be saved. He is coming soon. This is the time when the thrill of our search on aliens may be over!

Sometimes an Outright Lying at the Airport Works

           By Vic Odarve

Sometimes an outright lying at the airport works!

Vicodar observed that religious personalities like evangelists, ministers, priests, nuns, sisters, and brothers of Christian congregations were less likely interrogated during inspections at the airport.

International Airport

International Airport

After the snakelike cordoned queuing in the immigration checkpoint at the international airport, Vicodar was told to replace his yellow fever card with a prescribed one in a nearby clinic. So he did! With only a few people in the office, he immediately handed his card to one of the officers. ” Good day Sir, May I change this card with the prescribed one?” The officer nodded and said,” Your passport, visa, and valid ID please!” Vicodar complied. After a few minutes, the officer asked” You are a foreigner, what are you doing here in Nigeria?” “Am a missionary here working with Faith Ministry in Port Harcourt, Rivers State”, Vicodar said with a smile. “So you are a priest”, the officer said. Thinking for a while, he said, “Ah….. ah… yes! Sir”. The officer looked pleased and seemed very courteous; fixed his signature and handed back the documents. Then Vicodar said,” Thank you very much, God bless you all”. Then the officer and his fellow workers said in chorus” Thank you, Father, Amen”.

Middle East Airport

Dubai Airport

Plane boarding inspection

Plane boarding inspection

While lying can leave us indelible torture in our conscience, but the same goes for being too honest and open. Why? Telling the truth may entail too much delay in interrogation or may end with solicitation. Remember the airport greeting “Do you have something for me?”

Vicodar is not a priest. He actually owns the baggage. He is a mere employee in one of the great schools in Nigeria. Outright lying works! A little deception is needed! It works at the airport.

Old Pictures; Beyond Forgetting

               By Vic Odarve

Seemingly unimportant and usually taken for granted or forgotten, old photographs capture precious moments, recall the details, and remember the traces of footprints of our yesteryears. Old photos are the living witness of the happiest or saddest moments; allows to recall all the details down the road and rewinding how life was spent in the times of our life.

Boy Scouts of the Philippines

          Boy Scouts of the Philippines

Yes, in my ancestral home, old framed pictures hanging on the wall remind me where I spent my childhood days, my great-grandparents’ heydeys, and some of the most memorable parts of my life. In one of the photos, I was once a platoon leader of a boys’ scout group ready for jamboree competition to a nearby village. We were in complete uniform with a cap on the heads in a scout drill formation. Even in black-and-white, it was easy to tell that we were then kids schooling at Mayana Primary Schools. Scouting has been a part of my life for longer than I can remember. My parents told me that I have always loved scouting life during my primary education. And this old picture confirms!

Upon scanning more of the pictures, old memories gradually flashback and forth in my minds from the events of the distant past. The traces of memories that appear to disintegrate over time seem real and fresh. Looking back to my childhood days, with the days spent together with our great grandparents and country people, these memories are beyond forgetting!

Mayana basketball team 1977

It is indeed enjoyable to see these old pictures. It stirs our memories and recalls the days of our youth. I would like to rewind the good old days when we played basketball games during fiesta celebration. Now, the village of Mayana is one of my favorite getaway destinations. Going back to the old trail of the San Miguel Academy, I can feel like walking through mist and clouds along the mountain ranges, meet all the fairies and magical creatures, and watch the birds doing orchestra along with the canopies. Remembering my good old childhood days, it is sort of feeling that cannot be captured on camera and more than the old pictures hanging on the wall.

20170512_082013

There really is no place like home. Old pictures remind me the places and events where I come from; the land of my birth, and with all its diversity, the good and the bad, I would like to go there first over anywhere else in the world. It is just proper to share our good old days and momentous moments to our sons and grandsons how we spent our lives before.

The Bible puts it;

“Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your sons and your grandsons”. Deuteronomy 4:9

For us the living, the old pictures keep us remember and stir our memories. It is beyond forgetting!

Competent Math Lecturer, Please!

                 By Vic Odarve

“I hate math. It gives a headache every time I enter the class. The lecturer just copies a problem and its answer in a textbook and do little discussion, then complete the lecture period”, muttered one student after two- hour talk. A common complaint among students!

Math students doing seatwork

Math students doing seatwork

Unlike other courses where memory counts with a little class discussion, math lecturers must solve problems using mathematical calculations, discuss in a readable and compact manner, and persuade students to contemplate and enjoy math. Computation is a lifeblood in problem solving; hence math calculation skill of a teacher is needed. Further a teacher must have a deep understanding to enable a detailed step by step discussions as to whys the actions are done. Communication prowess allows the lecturers to organize the teaching methods in an efficient manner without much complication to students’ understanding. An amazing picture inside the schoolroom! That’s how a competent math lecturer teaches.

Math students

Math students

As solving math problems and exercises form part most of the activities in the classroom, lecturers must possess an outstanding skill in math computation techniques.  Math calculations are the primary elements in problems solving and most students struggle in pain over this country; hence math lecturers must have an extended knowledge in math.  Without this skill, course content roadmap may suffer; often part of the topics may not be discussed on what is supposed to be completed in a semester.

Math qualifications play an important role as lecturer

Math qualifications play an important role as lecturer

Ability to discuss well every step of the math calculation facilitates attentiveness of the students. Sensing that students fail to grasp the manner how the steps are done, the lecturer will slowly expound the subject matter and occasionally review the ways in every solution step. Lecturers must explain the principles and theorems succinctly and clearly; draw some parallel application to our everyday lives. A little review in a discussion that initially baffled them will all of a sudden make sense. Failure to understand the steps as to whys they are done results to poor math foundation. Then impending disaster awaits on the next level math course, as poor preparation takes its toll.

The picture inside the classroom is clear: smooth sailing discussion, where all eyes will be on the board and ears to the lecturers and topics appear easy and simple. Relax and confident, lecturers can explain the course topics in a detailed manner; repeat the discussion as if they know what students are asking for.

Math courses are indeed difficult, but with competent lecturers, students who traditionally struggle math begin to build confidence. Math becomes a relevant and never a boring course. So, with a vibrant, expert, and competent math lecturer mathematics is simple and interesting. Good lecturers have the power to change the students’ negative attitude towards math.!

Students must enjoy and love math. Mathematics does have a purpose and a meaning. Being the language of nature, math unfolds the secrets of our universe… from dark matter to the gravitational waves – what are sometimes referred to as ripples in the curvature of space-time. In math competent lecturers really matter!

Birthday; A Reminder That you are Going Older

          By Vic Odarve

Unlike many celebrations in our modern world, the birthday party is personal and unique; that it commemorates someone’s day of birth, one chapter of life closes, and other pages will be opened. It is the day you have seen the first light and cried in your mother’s arms, announcing your arrival to the world. It also reminds that you have survived another year and one chapter of your life closes. Then another horizon will be opened and face what the future lies ahead; it’s another day. Simply, it reminds that you are getting older!

Birthday is like a fiesta celebration

It is being held in commemoration of someone’s day of birth; comes once a year. Often a gift of assorted designs decorated with celebrant’s age highlighted the occasion. The cake is studded with lit candles where the celebrant usually makes a silent wish and attempts to blow out the candles in one breath. In addition to family members, celebrant invites friends and relatives, to grace the occasion. Sumptuous food preparation at these celebrations includes noodles, which represent long life.

The life of an individual is likened to a book. The birthday, which comes once a year is compared to a life chapter. The celebration closes a chapter of celebrant’s life. All what one has done, an accomplishment for that year, is written and recorded. It is your book of life; God will open it in the judgment day. Birthday reminds you to look back your footprints of your journey in life; no matter how difficult or comfortable they were, they are part of your life. Glimpse your performance as they mirror your journey as another chapter in life closes.

                 Getting Older

As one chapter of your life closes, another one opens; full of hope and promises. It is seen as the start of a new part of your life; brings new optimism and insights on your future. This is another milestone; the fact that you have survived another year. Maybe it is the time to reflect your life and see what is needed to change; attitude or lifestyle or focusing on the good things you have not fulfilled in the previous years. Life is too short; it is the time to think again.

Birthday celebration differs from one culture to another; it depends on the religion and race. Simply this is a reminder that people are born in this world to fulfill something; why we are here and where we are going. Everyone loves birthdays, especially his or her own. Whether we like it or not, birthday reminds us that we are getting older.

Feeling Being Loved is a True Happiness

                 By Vic Odarve

“My husband wants to die in my arms”, said Celine Dion, who took time off from singing engagement to care for her husband, René Angélil, who is battling throat cancer. “But when you have family around and knows he is being loved, I think it helps tremendously”, she added.

Kids feel they are being loved

Kids feel they are being loved

Feeling being loved is a true happiness. Although fame, wealth, and pleasure make people happy, the feeling of being loved is a true happiness. Feeling being loved by your family, friends and relatives give a pleasant emotions. Also being loved by a community where you live in brings peace of mind; inspire to help others. More so, doing work that you truly love give strength and generates ingenuity. Experiencing of being loved and loving on what you are doing in life is a true happiness.

Happiness enables us to hurdle the ups and downs

Happiness fuels us to thrive in ups and downs of life.

Feeling being loved by our loved ones, family, friends and relatives affect us physically and mentally in countless ways. The happiness provides us with the fuel to thrive in the high and lows we encounter on our journey as human beings. It is the feeling of being loved that enable us to lift up over tragedies, sufferings, or painful moments of life. The feeling we got   through the spoken voice and written words and other expressions of supports keep our world go round. Like the husband of Celine Dion, although anguishing in pain over his sickness, but dying over in her arms, is itself an experience of true happiness. Feeling being loved is all that matters!

Doing something that gives you pleasure

Doing something that gives you pleasure

Doing charitable works in society, and living morally upright, turn out to be a true happiness. You will be loved by the people; a feeling that gives a sense of fulfillment of the purpose of your life; you know what you live for. Feeling loved cheers your life as a member of the society. The helping of the needy, poor, and those who have less in life and never expecting in return is God’s wisdom. Mother Theresa of India has done such thing; bringing help to suffering humanity. It is a true happiness.

With family around, it brings happiness

With family around, it brings happiness

More so, doing work that you truly love gives strength and generates ingenuity. This is a true happiness. The love of what you are doing keeps you consistently perform at higher levels. Your work gives you less stress. Edison, Einstein, and Newton, have something in common…they truly loved their work. Because of the work and dedication, the scientific world owes much from them since the invention of light bulbs to the theory of relativity and gravity in Physics. They do enjoy their job, and that’s why they are creative and resourceful —because they are.

While normal happiness derives from fame, wealth, and pleasure is dependent on material things that may lose in a blink of an eye, true happiness from feeling being loved can be felt by all walks of life…poor and rich alike. Feeling being loved gives fulfilling lives; brings peace to your mind, heart and soul. It is incomparable to happiness that material things bring. “Even I have a hectic work schedule, I go back once a month to help my dad and mom in the province to clean the house. I could buy everything for me, but could not ever even compare their love for me to any parents out there”, confessed one of the professors in a university. Feeling being loved really matters.

Staying Together

Staying Together

Feeling being loved gives us the true happiness that keeps us growing stronger to pace ourselves the ups and downs of life. Whether we are born poor, rich, and famous, feeling being loved is experiencing a true happiness!

If you feel nobody cares or loves you, you are worthless and your existence is awful to describe!

Simple Joys That Nature can Offer

                                            By Vic Odarve

Mother Nature has, and always be, offers her inexpensive entertainment. From the forested land and mountains, an orchestra of birds doing choir. In the sky, a canopy of clouds is drifting above our heads doing a military drill and at night stars are twinkling in unison like an entertainment in the heavens. Back to our sandy beaches and rivers, beautiful sights will remain a joy to remember for the rest of your life. Nature has, and forever be, gives pleasures free of charge to everybody!

Mayana ricefields scenery

It is always a joy to visit farms with our family and kids as a weekend retreat area. Nearby are mountains, dense forest, and a pristine river. What we do there! Feel the earth. We feel like walking through mist and clouds along the mountain ranges, meet all the fairies and magical creatures, and watch the birds doing orchestra along with the canopies. By remembering our good old childhood days, it is sort of feeling that cannot be captured on camera and more than the old pictures hanging on the wall.

During daytime, clouds can be seen drifting above our heads. At nighttime, it is a joy to see the canopy of stars twinkling in all the heavens; stretching like an enormous spider’s web scattered in all directions across the vastness of the cosmic ocean. We feel the presence of our Creator; we owe our lives to these stars. By thus doing, we feel the joy that Nature gives.

Spending moments at Loay floating restaurant, Bohol, Philippines

We can also feel the best of Mother Nature just by walking alone or with your loved ones along the sandy beaches or take a ride on a floating restaurant alongside in a river. Watching fireflies at the banks of a river, observing trees decorated with bird’s nests, and simply following the sun faded in the western sky at the end of the day will open our eyes to the earth and all its glory. For a moment, we feel the tranquillity of our lives away from the toxic city life.

With all the joys that nature brings to mankind, it is just proper and just to give thanks to the Lord our God who endows this earth with all of its glory. The Bible puts it clearly that God created all these majestic mountains, glorious clouds, and beautiful sceneries in Psalm 147:8 “Who covers the heaven with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass to grow upon the mountains.”It is the declaration of his majestic Hands.

Nature, as always be, gives us pleasure free of charge…from forested lands and mountains, clouds and stars, to sandy beaches and rivers. It is all given unconditionally… to the poor, the rich, and the mighty!

That Awful Old Age

                By Vic Odarve

Whether we like it or not we are getting older in the passing of years and that awful old age, called “elderly” has two faces to challenge —deplorable stage or relatively affluent living conditions.

Auntie Pising at 92 years old

Deplorable elderly conditions are common among the poor families in our society where they live alone in the homes with the absence of care from the sons or daughters or help from the government. While on the other hand, elderly who hail from affluent families spend their twilight years in the household of their children, grandchildren, and relatives and friends and receive great tender love and care.

The first picture is a horrible one. Incapacitated elderly that are usually long decline in death suffered most; incapable of continuing to live alone and members of the family or relatives simply abandon or did not extend help. Some of them are bedridden, paralytic, and other stricken diseases that place them in very deplorable conditions. They clearly need assistance, compassion, and understanding, and kindness from a well-minded individual.

However, there are some elderly who still enjoy life living together with their children or grandchildren as they did since the beginning; supported by the relatively affluent families and friends. Most of them are receiving pensions and other benefits from governments. They are treated as members of their children’s family with basic needs in life; reminding us to take care of our own dear children at the prime of our life.

Our neighbor Casimiro at 94 years old

No one really knows how long a person lives. For those who are not fortunate enough ended their twilight years in the government homes for the aged; away from their beloved children and grandchildren, relatives and friends. As by most cultural tradition, parents who care their children through thick and thin throughout the journey in their lives and able to manage as a whole knitted family ended their twilight years under the loving arms of their children.

In spite of advances in the modern medical profession, all of us are getting older about the passing years; the thought of what might happen to us as we cross to the dark side of old age is a real drama of our life. Mankind must return from dust to dust, but before knocking out to the world stage, an unspeakable old age presses people down, rendering either living in a deplorable or well-cared stage in their lives. The fact is, most of us come to a frail stage and whether we like it or not, that awful old age is a reality that everyone has to accept.

Ideal Family; an Elusive Dream

                                                By Vic Odarve

Although all families can be strong and healthy, only a few seem to have it “together” while other families seem to struggle with pain in keeping their own. An ideal family is a place of love whose members are bonded together by cheerful and loving parents, socially and academically successful children. The family members share pleasant things and work as a unit, and parents manage disagreements constructively through effective communication. But in the real world, only a few succeeded; for others, an ideal family remains a dream and imagination.

Everyone has its own family but a perfect one remains an elusive dream

In an ideal family, parents as prime mover must provide comfort and emotionally fulfill to all members. They must be cheerful and loving and spend a positive time together with the kids, and in the process build their wonderful feelings and relationship. Talking, planning, and working certain things together build strong family ties. Since every individual is unique and disagreements arise, conflicts must be dealt constructively. Effective communication provides an emotional and sound environment.

Outstanding family results in a well knitted and strong children’s relationship bonded together by love. They look their parents as a model. They should love each other the same as their father loves their mother. They learn how their parents do everything to keep the family connected and bonded together; how activities are managed and controlled to make the world going around harmoniously.

An ideal family is like a beautiful sunset

But in married life, it is not always a picture of beautiful sunsets; sometimes the journey is rough and temptation abounds along the way. When I visited a friend of mine a few days ago, his family seemed perfect; the beautiful home with three kids, beautiful cars of the latest model, beautiful wife managing a good company; everything, as it would appear, was perfect. And he was just promoted to an executive in a big company; his career in high gear. But spending a weekend with them, I noticed their family was not a happy one. There seemed to be a feeling of disunity among them, negative attitude of the children is clear, and love insecurity, etc.…. The wholesome relationship was obviously missing… an ingredient that cannot be filled up with all the material things and work successes they have possessed.

Sometimes couples’ relationship and life satisfaction set off to its lowest point; turns sour, humiliation, distress, troubling, sleepless nights, and if not well attended, ended in divorce and separation. Even kings, princes, and celebrities in our society separated their wives or husbands one after the other. In 1527 King Henry VIII of

Happy moment

A happy moment

England, after feeling dissatisfaction in giving birth to his wife, a son, separated from his wife Catherine and married Anne Boleyn. This act was not approved by Rome and after years of conflicting views, England established their own Anglican Church. There are celebrities, too, that have been very successful in their careers, but not so successful with their marriages. One of them is famous Elizabeth Taylor, who has taken sacred vows eight times and still found the ideal family elusive.

Henceforth, for several people, the search for ideal family exists only in imagination. The commitment of love and dedication for husband and wife and children is simply out of the spectrum; numerous culprits wreak havoc on the relationship which finally leads to an ugly end… to divorce and separation. When parents separate, it creates a great pain in the whole family, but as time passes, children learn to adjust and understand that family life is not at all ideal!

Simplest Way to Study Math

      By Vic Odarve

This is the simplest way to learn mathematics! It is enjoyable and fun! Follow me and let’s explore!

At classroom, you listen intently to your teacher or lecturer. Every word he speaks gathers important information. Observe how he does the steps in solving the problems or exercises. Ask a question if necessary.

Working Examples at the classroom

Working Examples at the classroom, University of Immaculate Conception, Davao City

Then at home, it is your turn! Open your notes. Review and study the steps. Recall the reasons why the professor does it.

Finally, test your understanding! This is the moment! Close the notes and get an extra sheet of paper and solve it by yourself. If you fail to get the correct answer, open your notes and see why you get wrong. Rework if you get wrong! Don’t stop doing it until you get it right! It is just like playing the game of “hide and seek”. You hide the solutions of the problems in your notes and seek its answer by solving yourself. That’s it!

It’s as simple as that. It is just a pleasure! Practice makes perfect as the saying goes. It holds true!

This simple technique develops a positive thinking. If the final answer is the same as your notes, it gives you confidence. And getting the correct answer raises your adrenaline to a certain level of excitement and joy. Confidence is building up!

Then go out in your room and relax. See the world outside. It pictures better. It sounds good. You will be in a good mood as if the world is joining your excitements. Happiness for getting the correct answer! That is without seeing the solution from your notes! And you get it right! It is like medicine. It alleviates depression! It fosters positive mood!

Harvesting rice in Mayana- Beautiful scenery is the work of His Hands

After studying at your room go out and see this picture of harvesting rice in Mayana- Beautiful scenery is the work of His Hands

One of my friends was doing this before our final exam. I met him outside of his house seeing the panoramic landscape of ricefields in Mayana… a beautiful scenery reminding us that we are part of His creation. I caught him humming the old favorite song of the Lettermen as if in harmony with the bird’s performing orchestra on the bough of the trees as the sunset faded in the western sky. I told him “Why are you looking at these pictures so happy and smiling, my friend”? What was his answer? “I know now the secrets on how to study mathematics.” Then he showed me his scratched papers and said,” I solve it by myself, without looking at my notes”. That was his reply. So astonishing!

It caught me by surprise. Indeed, he had learned mathematics in the simplest way!

Learning mathematics is a fun-filled activity. It makes the lives of the students better and, us, too. Even this simple technique is interesting! I love students come to see me with toothy smiles, saying,” Sir, you make our study in mathematics in this university simple and easy”.

What’s Unique in Bohol Fiesta Celebration?

                             By Vic Odarve

Widely ridiculed that the island will sink due to the influx of visitors during the month of May, the Bohol fiesta celebration draws their relatives from all over the world; allows them to join festivities with the native population, and shares their blessings for the whole year. It is indeed a unique tradition that the native inhabitants have been doing since time immemorial.

             A family reunion

For most of the native Boholanos who find their living outside the province, they feel that it is the obligation to visit their ancestral homes and opportunity for a family reunion and meeting their relatives and friends. The celebration drives excitement to revisit the island; links the roots of where they came from, and time for bonding and reunite the old folks, relatives, and long lost friends. Sightseeing the place where their old grandparents used to trail before is also another thing. It is an expanded universe. It is like traveling to the past where our forefathers were once before! And for those who once lived there before want to look back on their childhood years that were filled with events and memories.

During the month of May, villages often have color displays hanging along their streets, welcome signboards to visitors, and different neon lights display during the celebration. There are also carnivals where people could play, enjoy different rides on Ferris wheels, or just enjoy the native foods being sold at different stalls. The populace, with open arms, invites friends, relatives, and even strangers to join the big food preparation at homes.

                A new generation

Highlights during celebrations are basketball and volleyball games, discos, dances, and beauty pageants and clan reunions. The festivities also include processions with floats adorn with images of each village or town’s patron saint and sometimes local beauties. Lots of fun to join!

The folks have considered fiesta celebration as part of their tradition. Fiestas serve as a thanksgiving of the community people to their patron saints for the whole year blessings they receive; share what they have, not just the material thing, but also the joy and happiness; and thank the Lord above all for everything He has given. They save money for a year and spend during fiesta just to have something to serve and celebrate. Through good and bad times, the fiesta must go on.

Flores de Mayo is one of the highlights in 1980-81 Mayana fiesta celebration

Fiesta seems to shape the homing instinct of the Boholanos, and Bohol fiesta celebration is indeed a unique one. Boholanos, residing within and outside the country, come home during the month of   May to join the annual fiesta celebration. It is a never-ending journey of their life… extending to the next generation. Seeing the happy faces could already alleviate the burden after the celebration. For foreigners, hospitality, and warm receptions are worth emulating. For the senior boholanos, the celebration meant excitements to meet your old friends . Because life is so short, we should live to the fullest expression of ourselves before we cross to the other side of the universe.

Join the Bohol fiesta celebration, please!

Kneel and Ask Forgiveness?

By Vic Odarve

Uniquely African practice!  Kneeling and asking forgiveness for violations or mistakes is a common practice among college students.

It was a final examination day in Mathematics! Amid a hot and crowded exam room, I saw two students copying answers with each other. Without warning, I confiscated their papers. Then they knelt before me and said,” Sir, we are sorry”.

Engineering students

Engineering students

I have not yet decided on what punishment would I take, but they were there kneeling before you! Then I told them,”Stand up, do not kneel before me, stand in front of the class until I tell you to sit down”.

I was caught by surprise as I have not experienced students kneeling before me for several years of teaching in university/college in our native soil. But this is an African country! They have their own way of practice.

In most parts of the world, it is one of the customs to kneel to a person who is older or in authority as a sign of respect. Kneeling is often associated with reverence or submission. In religion, kneeling is associated with worshiping. It is an expression of submitting yourself to the Almighty.

But college students are kneeling here! Students kneeling before the teachers are  a common sight in African colleges and universities, according to one of my colleagues, an African lecturer. This could be the practice since time immemorial as this continent was once ruled by kings and queens who were revered like God by the constituents. These constituents are kneeling before them for some reasons.

Final Exam

Final Exam

Perhaps there are no other more profound forms of pleading or asking forgiveness or help from a person in authority than kneeling. When you see college students kneeling before a teacher and pleading for forgiveness for the mistakes they committed, the teacher simply cannot ignore. We have to balance our assertiveness in exercising our authority in the classroom at the same time being approachable. That is establishing a limit, a boundary or red lines!

  Even Jesus, seeing a woman kneeling before him, did not simply ignore since he sees the action comes truly from her heart. Read the  Matthew 15;22-28;

22 Now a Canaanite woman came from those borders and began to cry out, “Lord, Son of David, have pity on me! My daughter is tormented by a demon.”

23 But Jesus did not answer her, not even a word. So his disciples approached him and said, “Send her away: see how she is shouting after us.”

24 Then Jesus said to her, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel.”

25 But the woman was already kneeling before Jesus and said, “Sir, help me!”

26 Jesus answered, “It is not right to take the bread from the children and throw it to the little dogs.”

27 The woman replied, “It is true, sir, but even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said, “Woman, how great is your faith! Let it be as you wish.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Are these college students using kneeling as a smart way of admitting the mistakes and needing immediate forgiveness? Does kneeling, an action asking forgiveness or reverence, come true from their hearts? Are these new generations of college students redefined kneeling on their favor? Nobody knows!

Kneeling and asking forgiveness… its African way of life.

Bantayan paggawas pag uli kon unsang orasa

Senior Na Pero Single Pa

Naunsa na man ning nasudlan kong kalibotan

Senior na ko karon, gwapa pero nag-inusara.

Usahay di nimo mahibaw-an
